Audible Editor Reviews

As much as thrills and chills, Mary Shelley's seminal horror story was innovative for its intricate, character-driven plot, wherein the monster's version of events is pitted against his creator's. This ensemble cast of veteran actors combines to enliven and elucidate Shelley’s multilayered narrative. Donald White portrays Victor Frankenstein, consumed by hatred of his scientific monstrosity, but increasingly downtrodden from unspeakable tragedy of his own making. Jim Roberts relates the equally harrowing plight of Victor's monster, abandoned by humankind, fueled by self-loathing and vengeance as he relentlessly pursues Victor to the ends of the Earth. Cindy Hardin chimes in as Elizabeth Lavenza, Victor’s wholesome and virtuous fiancée. Enacting their characters’ respective sagas, the performers take turns in the spotlight, combining throughout to deliver colorful dialogue sequences.

Publisher's Summary

One of the most remarkable things about this book, the "mother of all monster stories", is that is was written by a teenager, the 19-year-old wife of Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. The story concerns a scientist, Victor Frankenstein, who conducts a great experiment to see if he can create a living being from the body parts of corpses. Only whe the experiment is successful does he begin to think of the ethics and consequences of what he has done. The creature he created becomes embittered when he finds that no one will love him becuase of his appearance. Dr. Frankenstein agrees to make is a mate, but then reneges and destroys the half-made female. His original creation vows revenge.

The book is both and incredible horror novel and a cautionary tale about a scientist who experiments first and thinks about the consequences later - something we can certainly appreciate today.

    "Made for a better movie..."

One of my favorite movies of all time, I've always wanted to read the book and after listening to the book, I still need to read it because the audio version was terrible. A great story and by far the best version of Frankenstein ever made but unfortunately, the greatness of it, just did not translate well for audio.
