Publisher's summary

Recently orphaned, young Rose Campbell is sent to the "Aunt Hill", where Uncle Alex, her six aunts, and seven boy cousins live in noisy confusion. It is nothing like the quiet girls’ boarding school that has been Rose’s home for the past year. Surrounded by a bewildering array of pets, relatives, and unfamiliar foods, the fragile girl wonders if she will ever get used to this new life. Fortunately, Uncle Alex is her guardian. He keeps the aunts from coddling her too much, and makes sure that she has plenty of time to play outside with her cousins.

Day by day, learning how to care for each of these people, Rose begins to bloom. Eight Cousins is a charming introduction to Louisa May Alcott’s timeless classics, which include Little Women and Little Men. Barbara Caruso’s colorful narration perfectly captures Rose and her extended family.

Genuinely Charming and Gentle Story

This is a charming and rather gentle story of an orphan that comes to lives in a big house with her two maiden aunts and her guardian uncle. Her uncle is a physician and sets about getting her healthy in a practical and wholesome way.

In this small community, she has other Aunts with boy sons, and all together they are "The Eight Cousins." There are small adventures and she sets about learning womanly skills as well as some more progressive skills for her time. There isn't a "big plot" as much as this is the story of Rose finding her place in the family.

The book's performance is more of a "reading" than a performance. There is no special effort to differentiate between male and female voices. It's well done, though, and seems very appropriate. It's a very low-stress listen. I played it for my daughter as a bedtime story, we listened to a chapter or two each evening, it was very enjoyable.

Better than I remembered!

If you could sum up Eight Cousins in three words, what would they be?

Full of heart

What was one of the most memorable moments of Eight Cousins?

When they go to the mountains and find an outdoor way of life marvelous.

Have you listened to any of Barbara Caruso’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is my 1st book by Barbara Caruso. There were multiple times while listening in public that I had to choke back a sob or blink away a tear. She is excellent.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Uncle Alex's love for his orphaned niece.

Any additional comments?

It is wholesome. No swearing, sex or violence. No taking the Lord's name in vain. Just people being interesting in their thoughts. I think this could be enjoyed by boys and girls.

A childhood classic that still holds it's charm!

I was so happy to find this gem. The story is a scoach dated. But I love it all the more for the memories those words brought back.

Love the Book

Very enjoyable book. Hated to have to stop listening, when I had to do other things. The reader was wonderful. She read as if she loved the book also.

The beginning for Rose in Bloom

Any additional comments?

This is a good little book. It is totally innocent and tells a sweet story of Rose, an orphan, who comes to live with relatives and meets her cousins. It is a typical Louisa May Alcott book. The characters are likable and act as they should. Rose is perfection in all ways - looks, manners, morals, kindness and behavior. It is set in a time that regrettably has long gone by, The reader is fantastic and makes the people come alive. I highly recommend if you are in the mood for a sweet character driven book.

DELIGHTFUL!

This is one of my very favorites! The story and narration are wonderful! My 12 year old listened to this during the Pandemic Quarantine and announced that it was her favorite book. It is so happy and so sweet.

Always a favorite.

Loved this story as a child and I love it now. I also was a small girl surrounded by boy cousins and a mass of Aunts. I only wish I had an uncle like Rose did and a Phoebe.
