Audie Award Nominee, Classic, 2013

Because of the widespread awareness of the story of the evil Transylvanian count and the success of numerous film adaptations that have been created over the years, the modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

This production of Dracula is presented by what is possibly the best assemblage of narrating talent ever for one audiobook: Emmy Award nominees Alan Cumming and Tim Curry plus an all-star cast of Audie award-winners Simon Vance (The Millenium Trilogy), Katherine Kellgren (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies), Susan Duerden (The Tiger’s Wife), John Lee (Supergods) and customer favorites Graeme Malcolm (Skippy Dies), Steven Crossley (The Oxford Time Travel series), Simon Prebble (The Baroque Cycle), James Adams (Letters to a Young Contrarian), Nicola Barber (The Rose Garden), Victor Villar-Hauser (Fun Inc.), and Marc Vietor (1Q84). These stellar narrators have been cast as follows:

Alan Cumming as Dr. Seward
Simon Vance as Jonathan Harker
Katy Kellgren as Mina Murray/Harker
Susan Duerden as Lucy Westenra
Tim Curry as Van Helsing
Graeme Malcolm as Dailygraph correspondent
Steven Crossley as Zookeeper’s account and reporter
Simon Prebble as Varna
James Adams as Patrick Hennessey
Nicola Barber as Sister Agatha
Victor Villar-Hauser as Arthur Holmwood
Marc Vietor as Quincey Morris
John Lee as Introductory paragraph, various letters

Critic reviews

"Listening to this full-cast performance turns out to be remarkably suspenseful and chilling…The superlative cast lends this powerful production the diversity that is required by the structure of the novel…Each actor employs various accents, infusing into the characters vibrant emphasis, urgency, and dread." More than a vampire story

Plot notes:
I hadn't gotten around to Dracula because I had a working knowledge of the plot but actually "reading" it lets me appreciate the language, descriptions, characters. These details add much to the story.

Small tangents like the humane society trying to rescue and adopt out the dog that runs off that cursed ship and like Mina's throw away thought about women proposing to men some day were delightful human details that I appreciated. Also, here is story that teaches a fundamental truth in committing crimes. Thank you, Doctor.

(Yes, I would absolutely be one of those townsfolk offering to adopt that dog... >.> )

Production notes:
Dracula is written as a collection of journal notes and as such, the voices you'll hear during this recording will change based on whose journal entry it is.
If you came here looking for Tim Curry to read the entire novel, it is both a blessing and a shame that that's not what this is.
A shame because Tim Curry, his acting, and his voice are a treasure. He is a great choice for Van Helsing but that means he does not actually read often.
A blessing because we get fantastic performances and voices from this entire cast who will be (if not already) uniquely treasured in time.

My point is that it's a bit misleading to list only 2 performers on the cover image, when there are other actors with larger parts. At least add Mina's actor to image. Poor character did all the work.

Easily the best horror novel of all time

Creepy subtle foreboding and encroaching evil. Good vs evil in It's purest form. Proper language. Good and ethical characters.

Great performance

The idea of combining journals and correspondence into a narrative helpes make the story seem more real. There is some excellent talent in this production, which improves a story that has stood the test of time

Not as expected

It’s not a full-cast but different people reading various chapters, the book is notes/letters/clipping I guess that’s how the story is written, just seemed a bit slow.

Timeless Classic

Just a good listen indeed! Excellent cast. A little confusing at points with who was narrating—felt like a few narrators covered the same characters. But a jolly good jaunt into a timeless classic!

Great performance

It was enjoyable to listen to, created great atmosphere. I read the book at the same time and when I got bored a little, I moved to audiobook (or when I was driving a car or cleaning my home). I was afraid that split into different actors would ruin the book, but it was the other way around. Thanks to its structure split into letters and diaries, not dialogues, it gets additional layer thanks to different voices. I really enjoyed it.

Every bit the classic it is said to be

First, The story was excellent. This was my first time reading (listening to) Dracula. It is always said that this book is a classic and now I know why. It is every bit as good as advertised.

I had no idea this was written as it was; as journal and diary entries etc. from the main characters. I was skeptical for a while but as the story went on, I bought in.

Second, the performance was excellent. I am not usually a fan of full-cast audio recordings but this one was just great!

Overall, I quite enjoyed this book and definitely recommend it.

Long but good

The narration is great! The book by several different characters and I thought that was really interesting. Over the course of the book I came to think of Van Helsing as a caring mentor, almost like a father figure to the other characters. Meanwhile, the Dracula in this book is very different from what it has become in pop culture.
