Publisher's summary

Exiled to four years in Siberia, but hailed by the end of his life as a saint, prophet, and genius, Fyodor Dostoevsky holds an exalted place among the best of the great Russian authors. One of Dostoevsky’s five major novels, Devils follows the travails of a small provincial town beset by a band of modish radicals - and in so doing presents a devastating depiction of life and politics in late 19th-century Imperial Russia. Both a grotesque comedy and a shocking illustration of clashing ideologies, Dostoevsky’s famed novel stands as an undeniable masterpiece.

Excellent!!!

Dostoevsky's description of his character's response to their reality remains superb in this novel as in his other great novels

A solid read

I read this because I enjoyed Crime and Punishment. Dostoevsky’s style is present and the story was intriguing. The cast of characters was strong and invoked emotion, but I was not as hooked as I was with C and P.

It takes a lot to build up, but loved it.

I loved this one! Everything and everyone is so dramatic! Had me cracking up but also on the edge of my seat over the drama. Top notch!

"I see you care a lot about your health"

The narrator is phenomenal and Dostoevsky is Dostoevsky. It really comes together at the midpoint.

Dostoyevsky's study of nihilism

Dostoyevsky's literary study of the consequences of the extremes of nihilism, and a masterwork of literature - inspiring!

Great characters and reader

This was my first experience with Dostoevsky and I was amazed by how well he wrote his characters. It’s not my usual type of book but it’s carried so well by the personality of the characters, that I found it hard to turn off and often would find monotonous things to do so that I could continue listening

Oh Dostoevsky

Hate him, love him, but Dostoevsky remains Dostoevsky. But above all kudos go to George Guidall. What a brilliant reading of a difficult novel. Thank you George!!!!!!

Shocking, horrifying, Dostoevsky at his best

An excellent narration. I will say, a warning to people looking to read this translation: chapter 8 is included in this translation, some translators refuse to translate that chapter because it deals with pedophilia. I had never read this book before and it was quite shocking and sickening. I probably wouldn’t have chosen this translation had I known.
Beyond that, excellent book as always, I’ve officially read everything available in English by Dostoevsky. All his short stories, and novels excluding only his political essays which are not available.
He’s incredible and the narrator did a great job. My only suggestion is perhaps adding commentary or a preface to be included to add historical context to these writings.
