Audible Editor Reviews

Henry Rider Haggard's wildly imaginative novels are very much a product of his fin de si├Ęcle era, laden with Victorian exoticism and concepts of adventure. Haggard's fictional characters have been referenced by Sigmund Freud and have inspired modern movie heroes like "Indiana Jones". Due to its somewhat stiff language (many "thou's" and "thee's), supposedly "transcribed" from papyrus scrolls, Cleopatra hasn't been as popular over the years as Haggard's novels She and King Solomon's Mines, but Brian Troxell's skilled performance manages to soften the audiobook's formal diction. The novel's eponymous heroine is just as compelling a character as Ayesha, a.k.a. "She-who-must-be-obeyed" in She.
