"Evelyn Waugh read by a truly great actor..."

Jeremy Northam (played Sir Thomas More in Showtime's The Tudors) is the perfect choice to read any English tale, especially someone of Waugh's stature. I give this 3 stars because it is abridged and there is a significantly disturbing musical soundtrack between chapters that is thrice as loud as Northam's reading. It actually hurt my ears.

This is the most famous work from one of last century's best English authors. Waugh, a Roman Catholic convert, was a contemporary and certainly influenced and was influenced by Chesteron, Ronald Knox, Graham Greene and TS Eliot. Known for his wit and ruthless honesty, he reviewed and admired the works of the great American writers Flannery O'Conner, Dorothy Day and Thomas Merton.

Like many classics, the characters are well developed and I found myself lost in Brideshead. I struggle often to find meaning in this type of novel, but I blame this on my lack of effort in education. However, I believe listening to classics adds even more to the experience and is essential when I cannot make myself read such a novel.

    "Fascinating..."

I found this story intriguing for the most part. However, upon many occasions I found myself wanting to re-read or re-listen as it were to a section to clarify details. I will listen to it again and revise my review if necessary.

"The audio isn't put together right."

Then enhanced audio isn't consistently in stereo, and the sections seem out of order. The not enhanced works fine, but the sections still jump around. It is really confusing.

"Interesting but not what I expected"

Was the audio on this out of order? Or is that the way the book reads? It seemed... unintentionally disordered.

    "awful reading"

Northam is a good actor but he reads this in such a quivering portentous voice I had to stop listening.

    "OMG a Catholic Tract!"
Would you try another book from Evelyn Waugh and/or Jeremy Northam?

Oh My God I thought Evelyn Waugh was an intelligent author, where did I ever get that idea? As a former-Protestant freethinker I was perturbed to discover partway through that this rather aimless story revokes around a lot of religious nonsense associated with the Catholic church, which is of less than no interest to me, and I stopped listening. But friends, for those of you interested in the bizarre 20th-century renaissance of "faith" among certain literary & aristocratic types, go for it.
