Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential: Let's face it: Jules Verne's book is pretty tedious in print. But I was in need of a listen for a family road trip, and was intrigued by what Jim Dale could do with Verne's "classic". To our pleasant surprise, my family and I were absolutely transported. Dale's brilliance takes what is essentially a lengthy travelogue and turns it into a glorious adventure. —Steve Feldberg

Combining exploration, adventure, and a thrilling race against time, Around the World in 80 Days gripped audiences upon its original publication and remains hugely popular to this day.

This recording includes an afterword written by Starr LaTronica, the Youth Services Manager of the Four Country Library System in Vestal, NY, and Tim Ditlow, Publisher of Listening Library, that explains the context of Jules Verne's cultural references since his story was crafted using the predominant opinions and biases of his time.

"Jim Dale + a classic? Take me away!"
Where does Around the World in 80 Days rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This translation is better than any print version I've found, and was a joy to listen to. It now holds a permanent place on my iPod.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Passepartout carried the day, the trip, the story.

Which character – as performed by Jim Dale – was your favorite?

My favorite line: Jim Dale as Passeparout exclaiming, "That takes the biscuit!"

    Any additional comments?

I very much appreciated the comments at the end from Tim Ditlow of Listening Library, putting the book in context of the time in which it was written and also giving listeners a history of his company.

"All the rave reviews? They were right! Excellent!"
Who was your favorite character and why?

Passepartout was probably my favorite character because of his passion and courage but also because of the humorous predicaments he got himself into. Phileas Fogg was also excellent, a rock solid, competent and (deep down) caring individual.

What about Jim Dale???s performance did you like?

His ability to make all the characters come alive by assuming heir personalities. You forgot that there was only one person reading.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    Laughed a lot.

    Any additional comments?

The story was excellent and Jim Dale's performance put it over the top. Will be hard to find a book to follow up.

    "A real trip!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

A definite recommend here. Although I did not know what to expect when I got this audiobook, I was treated to a delightful, fun time.

What does Jim Dale bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Jim Dale really makes the reading of this old classic a memorable listen. What an excellent reader! His perfect use of voices and accents richly endow the characters making each seem to come alive. You will find yourself developing strong opinions about each of the main ones.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Once the story got going, I found it very difficult to break away and pause the book. Time flew by and found myself wishing the story would keep on going. But, it ended.

    Any additional comments?

This audiobook, with its wonderful sound effects, makes each scene vivid and easy to imagine. Just close your eyes and enjoy a first class performance.

"Jim Dale is a genius of voice & mood!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The story is superb and captivating with the talent of Jim Dale. He so aptly distringuishes one character from another. Our family ages 8 to 49 y.o. each loved it.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Around the World in 80 Days?

The scenes from India are all well done but the suspense of rescuing the princess and who was in disguise was magnificent. We would occasionally stop the story to let our imaginations ponder the scene. We discussed not seeing the movie, even though it is a cliassic, just because we hate to disturb what the magic within ourselves.

What about Jim Dale’s performance did you like?

ANY book Jim Dale narrates is exceptional. We got hooked on listening to his talent in Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland. He can do a dozen voices and you can keep every character alive and individual. He does the same with this Jules Verne tale.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The narration is accompanied by poignant music lightly played in the background during particularly dramatic scenes that added to the suspence and mystery. It all kept you guessing and anticipating.
