Editorial reviews

The third book of L. M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables series finds its heroine, Anne Shirley, attending college and falling in love.

A loveable, headstrong orphan in the first book, Anne is a teacher in Avonlea, Nova Scotia, when she enrolls in Redmond College in Halifax. She’s followed by her lifelong friend Gilbert Blythe and Philippa, a charming girl from Anne’s hometown. It’s at college that Anne experiences the death of an old friend and the romantic attention of Roy Gardner. Anne’s ideas about love and friendship are tested and altered by these experiences.

Barbara Caruso’s inviting tone, well-paced narrative, and subtle characterizations make her performance in Anne of the Island stand out.

Publisher's summary

Anne Shirley, the mischievous, carrot-topped waif of Anne of Green Gables, has grown into a lovely young woman who leaves the security of Prince Edward Island to enroll at Redmond College. If you liked the two books before...

Where does Anne of the Island rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Middle of the pack. Not really special.

If you’ve listened to books by L.M. Montgomery before, how does this one compare?

I have only listened to the Anne books so far. And like most Authors or stories, the original is the best. Than the next book. Than the next. So this not the best one. BUT if you like Anne, than you will still enjoy terribly this one too.

Which character – as performed by Barbara Caruso – was your favorite?

Anne. She was always portrayed well.

Who was the most memorable character of Anne of the Island and why?

Marrilas adopted twin son. He was very funny and LM Mont captured his childlike nature well.

Anne just keeps getting better!

Just when I thought I would never find a narrator as lovely as Rachel McAdams for "That Anne girl", I found Barbara Caruso.
This is easily my favorite Anne book thus far and the stuff dreams are made of.
If you've enjoyed Anne of Green Gables and of Avonlea, do yourself a favor and listen to this recording of Anne of The Island

TRIGGER WARNING: TALK OF ANIMAL ABUSE

I'm sure if you're this far into the story you'll like the book but omfg there were a couple of chapters where they talked about murdering animals and drowning kittens. I know this was a different time when it was written but I wish I had been prepared. honestly I think if those chapters or lines were cut out it literally wouldn't have effected the story. wtf was the point in putting a chapter in where they try to euthanize a cat or just throw around the idea that you should drown kittens????

just be careful cat lovers or try to ignore those chapters to get through the story

Anne goes to college!

I love all the Anne books. I really enjoyed all Anne’s adventures in college. When I was younger, reading about the friends she makes and her academic accomplishments and romantic pratfalls helped me feel more prepared for college, even tho her school days were in a different century than mine. L.M. Montgomery has a great gift for character development; there are lots of wise words, wry humor and beautiful descriptions. It was a joy to listen to, tho the narrator sounds more middle aged than Anne really should, and occasionally adds an inaccurate Southern sort of drawl when certain characters like Davy speak. She does a good job conveying the feelings of the characters and the beauty of the language, so it’s a decent narration.

Beautiful story beautifully told

Personally my favorite volume of the classic series. The narrator has nice voice for it, soothing and homey.

Brought unexpected tears of sorrow and joy.

I loved it. Anne's adventures warm my heart. The narrator was quite good with all the different characters. I especially loved her voice when reading for little Davey & Mrs. Rachel Lynde. This was a very good book; maybe my favorite yet of the series.
