Publisher's summary

When Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert of Green Gables send for a boy orphan to help them out at their farm, they mistakenly get Anne Shirley, a feisty, independent but warm-hearted 11-year-old girl. Fortunately her sunny nature and quirky imagination win the hearts of her reluctant foster parents and everyone in the community. But not a day goes by without some memorable adventure or prank in the tragicomedy of her life. Early on she accidentally dyes her "cursed" red hair green. Later, in an effort to impress a neighbor, she bakes a cake, but with liniment instead of vanilla.

Lucy wrote that Anne is an extension of herself and represents the independent, "new" woman of the emerging 20th century. Individualistic, resourceful, and of a great humanitarian heart, she remains a great role model for girls and women today.

The Best of these Narrations

Many women, having read ???the Anne books??? during adolescence, find that this delightful heroine becomes part of them. I???m one of those women, and I???ve returned to her story many times over many years, always to laugh and cry again. This is the book that started it all, and it is wonderful.

When you???ve read a great book many times, it can be daunting to find a narrator who matches your own ???vision.??? Of the unabridged versions of Anne of Green Gables available from Audible, I recommend this one. I purchased the Ruth Ann Pfimister version on CD years ago and was very disappointed. I???ve sampled some of the other versions; this is the one I like best.

Ann of Green Gables

My daughter and I were hooked on this book the entire day. We spent over four hours glued to the each word as we colored posters. I really enjoyed the narrator and appreciated her characterization of each character through the inflections in her tone of voice. I was able to visualize characters more easily because of her intonations. I highly recommend this reading and I'm looking forward to hearing part 2.

The Magic of Childhood Revisited

I loved this. I had forgotten how fabulous the book is. I got it to listen to with my grand daughter (age 11). She enjoyed some of it, but it was not altogether to her current taste. Being very much of the movie generation and having seen the movie, she wanted the book to be the same. But I enjoyed every moment of it. A lovely classic beautifully read. One I am sure I will listen to again and again.

Great narrator!

I love this narrator's version of this book and Anne of Avonlea; I only wish she had done the rest of the series. That said, it was one of my favorite books to read as a child. The way Montgomery describes Anne's surroundings provides so much scope for the imagination.

So Very Good

I Love this story. I read it as a girl and fell in love with it then. Listening to it again has just reminded me why I fell in love with it at fourteen. One of my all-time favorites. I laughed and cried and loved right along with Anne. This is a book you can read again and again and enjoy every time.

A Favorite loved by All

If you could sum up Anne of Green Gables in three words, what would they be?

Still a favorite

What did you like best about this story?

It was a story I have read many times over the years from childhood to "great grandmotherhood". Being the only girl with four big brothers, I was always being put to a challenge and would seldom back down regardless of the outcome. Thus, it is easy to relate to Anne. Shelly Frasier is a marvelous reader and adapting her voice to each character.

Which character – as performed by Shelly Frasier – was your favorite?

I think it was Anne although the couple who took her in were true heroines.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Definitely!

Any additional comments?

Keep these old classics alive and in print so all generations may enjoy them for years to come.

Why do generations love this little girl?

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I did not enjoy the story becasue I was so distracted by Ann's self absorbtion and total lack of ability to think before she spoke ( on and on and on). I believe we are supposed to find the poor little orphan girl endearing. I just wanted her to be quite a moment.

Would you ever listen to anything by Lucy Maud Montgomery again?

Yes, but I hope her characters or a bit more realistic than Ann Shirley

Which scene was your favorite?

The end when she finally grew up and stopped to think before she gushed.

Was Anne of Green Gables worth the listening time?

Actually, no
