Publisher's summary

Paul Bäumer is just 19 years old when he and his classmates enlist. They are Germany’s Iron Youth who enter the war with high ideals and leave it disillusioned or dead. As Paul struggles with the realities of the man he has become, and the inscrutable world to which he must return, he is led like a ghost of his former self into the war’s final hours. All Quiet is one of the greatest war novels of all time, an eloquent expression of the futility, hopelessness and irreparable losses of war.

Best medium for this classic story

I've read the book and I've seen both versions of the movie (the classic one and the 1970's version). Without a doubt, the audio version beats the movies. This is because so much of the novel is an inner dialogue and descriptive passages that link the loss of a young generation to the experiences of warfare. While the movies capture the visuals of the battlefield, it cannot adequately show the impact.

I won't review the novel itself, as that has been done by many a better a reviewer than I. Suffice to say, this novel is approaching 100 years old and is still as fresh and pertinent today as then. If you aren't familiar with the story, then this is a "must read". There are few books that are it's equal.

great narrator.

I wish all of the war books were this well read. there are so many books on audible that I know would be so good, but the narrators are so bad that it's not palatable.

wish this guy could narrate them all.

All Quiet

This book should be required reading by anyone in favor of war. We know the country these soldiers are fighting for, but Remarque tells a story of any soldier from any country. Patriotism is not the important thing here, rather it is humanness, the fleeting joy of an evening spent sharing bread with the girls down the road from the barracks, the tense hilarity of capturing a goose and the feast after, the unspoken bond between two men. The narrator, Frank Muller, is my favorite of male narrators. His is a straightforward intelligent voice. He never tries to sound not like himself, he just knows how to deliver the story beautifully. I googled his name to see if he was an actor and what else he might have performed, what other books he may have narrated, and was heartbroken to read that he died a few years ago following a motorcycle crash, leaving a wife and young child.

Humbling. Sobering. Engrossing

What a heavy book. This story is critically. Important. Philosophical, whimsical at times but brutally honest and poignant about the futility, the cost and the pointlessness of War. Everyone should read this.

A brutally brilliant masterpiece.

Frank, as always, does a superb job of reading this classic.

It is sad how many noble good men die fighting on both sides of wars. It is true that there are villains in the ranks. However, the true villainy lies with the politicians, propagandists and reporters, who cause so many heroic warriors to fight and die for evil causes, and deceitful leaders. Making it necessary for champions of freedom to ruthlessly kill men that should and would be their brothers and friends otherwise. This book is a well written reminder of the evil and tragedy that is war.

Words that ring true

A heartbreaking account of the first world war by a German veteran.
Simply written with no bravado or glorification of war.
This should be required reading by any young person wanting to join their nation's military.
Frank Muller did a wonderful job of bringing this book to life.
