Publisher's summary

Paul Bäumer is just 19 years old when he and his classmates enlist. They are Germany’s Iron Youth who enter the war with high ideals and leave it disillusioned or dead. As Paul struggles with the realities of the man he has become, and the inscrutable world to which he must return, he is led like a ghost of his former self into the war’s final hours. All Quiet is one of the greatest war novels of all time, an eloquent expression of the futility, hopelessness and irreparable losses of war.

Great listening experience

The story is beautifully written and expertly narrated. I loved the distinct voices the narrator gave each character.

Gripping story I read 50 years ago as a youngster. Just as good now. A tale for all ages.

The feeling of being in a horrendous situation

The narrator spoke with feeling and soul. He was able to speak in such a way it brought the emotions of terror, loss and grief. Beautifully read.

Sad story superbly told

What made the experience of listening to All Quiet on the Western Front the most enjoyable?

This is a classic in the anti-war literature. It is not polemic, but reports in a matter-of-fact fashion what is happening to the main subject of the book, and also to his high school friends. The reading performance is very good. It does not put the reader at the center of the story, but helps the listener to stay interested.

What did you like best about this story?

Maybe "liking" is not the best choice of words for a story such as this. However, there are many impressive moments in this book.

Which scene was your favorite?

Not sure, but I found the story of Paul's--the book's major subject--visit home on leave particularly well-conceived.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

A bit too long for one setting

Any additional comments?

Recommended without any reservation whatsoever.

Sobering and realistic, brings you right there..

Where does All Quiet on the Western Front rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I would place it in the top 10% of the 15 audio books I've read this year so far

Who was your favorite character and why?

Paul the narrator of the story

Which scene was your favorite?

When Paul is for many hours in a bomb crater with an allied soldier he had to kill. The thoughts he expresses and the emotions he goes through tells you the mental horrors of war, especially the trench war of WW1

This is probably the best anti-war story ever.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. Everyone should read this before going to war or before sending anyone off to war.

What did you like best about this story?

It reinforced my earlier observation that war is a contrivance of old rich men to send young poor men to protect the interest of the former at the expense of the latter. War is the worse way to solve problems. WWI was called 'the great war'...it should have been called 'the great waste'.

1928 in the Trenches Account of WWI

Gut-wrenching, German soldier's tale of the Great War . . . it matters not what side this soldier was on . . . it matters that he was a human being . . . that he bled red . . . that he was in the trenches, that he loved his family, his comrades, that his bond with ALL who fight or who have EVER fought for their countries is one beyond our own understanding and above reproach, and that his understanding of the futility of war and hatred of war is his own . . . and he is well entitled to it . . .
