Publisher's Summary

Paul Bäumer is just 19 years old when he and his classmates enlist. They are Germany’s Iron Youth who enter the war with high ideals and leave it disillusioned or dead. As Paul struggles with the realities of the man he has become, and the inscrutable world to which he must return, he is led like a ghost of his former self into the war’s final hours. All Quiet is one of the greatest war novels of all time, an eloquent expression of the futility, hopelessness and irreparable losses of war.

    "Powerful"

I think the synopsis gives a fine explanation of the book itself as far as what it is about, so I will touch on the emotional impact this book had on me.

I had to read this in my 8th grade history class, now I don't know if I wasn't mature enough then, or I skimmed too much of this book, but I did not get nearly the depth out of this book as I did as an adult and in audio format.

This is one of those books that when it is finished you need to sit in silence for a while just to absorb everything. It is deep, powerful and moving. It certainly gave me a whole new perspective of veterans, especially those who were on the front lines and I maybe grasped a bit better why some come back and do not wish to speak of their time.

    "Well told story"

This is a well read story. The action of the story is compelling and the descriptions of World War I are horrifying. The book moves along quickly and leaves you with the sense of disgust that is intended. One of the best pieces of literature that shows the horror and helplessness of war.

"This is probably the best anti-war story ever."
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. Everyone should read this before going to war or before sending anyone off to war.

What did you like best about this story?

It reinforced my earlier observation that war is a contrivance of old rich men to send young poor men to protect the interest of the former at the expense of the latter. War is the worse way to solve problems. WWI was called 'the great war'...it should have been called 'the great waste'.

    "Intense listening"
Would you consider the audio edition of All Quiet on the Western Front to be better than the print version?

Listening to the voice of Frank Muller narrate this book was intense. I felt like the book was alive, and I was privy to a private conversation with the narrator. I was quite amazed how much intimacy I felt to the character and the author.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

So many, hard to list one. Many of the descriptive passages where the narrator yearns for home and his life restored.

    "Sad story superbly told"
What made the experience of listening to All Quiet on the Western Front the most enjoyable?

This is a classic in the anti-war literature. It is not polemic, but reports in a matter-of-fact fashion what is happening to the main subject of the book, and also to his high school friends. The reading performance is very good. It does not put the reader at the center of the story, but helps the listener to stay interested.

What did you like best about this story?

Maybe "liking" is not the best choice of words for a story such as this. However, there are many impressive moments in this book.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Not sure, but I found the story of Paul's--the book's major subject--visit home on leave particularly well-conceived.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

A bit too long for one setting

    Any additional comments?

    Recommended without any reservation whatsoever.

"Sobering and realistic, brings you right there.."
Where does All Quiet on the Western Front rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I would place it in the top 10% of the 15 audio books I've read this year so far

Who was your favorite character and why?

Paul the narrator of the story

    Which scene was your favorite?

When Paul is for many hours in a bomb crater with an allied soldier he had to kill. The thoughts he expresses and the emotions he goes through tells you the mental horrors of war, especially the trench war of WW1

    "Awesome Story. Well Read."
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It is a very depressing story but that is the point of its theme. That's what makes it so great. It's wonderfully written.

    "Audio quality is awful"

Was really looking forward to reading this but found the audio quality was very poor...actually I think it was the narrator too, emphasizing some parts in a clear voice then switching to a whisper and the variance was just too much. I had to quickly turn up or down the sound to account for this difference.

    "Gritty war brought to life"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This is a classic, often taught in school. Somehow I never read it back then, though I had heard of it often. The story is compelling, even if depressing. The reality of the life of soldier in the trenches in WW I is very much brought to life.
