Publisher's summary

The best American novel to emerge from World War I, A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse.

Hemingway's frank portrayal of the love between Lieutenant Henry and Catherine Barkley, caught in the inexorable sweep of war, glows with an intensity unrivaled in modern literature, while his description of the German attack on Caporetto, of lines of fired men marching in the rain, hungry, weary, and demoralized, is one of the greatest moments in literary history.

A story of love and pain, of loyalty and desertion, A Farewell to Arms, written when he was 30 years old, represents a new romanticism for Hemingway.

Fantastic

I did not know the story. The narrator did a wonderful job. I will think about this story forever, especially when I walk in the rain.

Perfect Narrator

Loved this book, the narrator captured all of the personalities perfectly. I listened to it twice and enjoyed it more the second time, I captured all the nuance better.

Amazing Classic

First time reading or listening to this book and it was so good. The story and the characters are great, and the quick dialogue and human interactions really make it an easy book to love. This Hemingway guy has a bright future. ;-)

Well executed classic

The story is well known and I won’t review. The execution of this audiobook does justice to the work.

Hemingway on Young Hemingway.

While many complain about the omission of the profanity it really do not bother me as the war is gritty real enough and the performance is just as needed lifting the book to an atmosphere of being abroad in an alien land filled with distinct characters. For all that the romance and time together is just that and not particularly romantic and perhaps that is part of its intent to place love in context within war and loss without the over sentiment that distance provides. And the war front parts are great in keeping a certain distance too but that loses none of the intensity. Required Hemingway if you read all his work as autobiography and situates his relationship with women. As such this is better as a lead to Sun Also Rises, which remains my favorite novel of his.

Hemingway…

Some that you love and some not so much. This is one of the best Hemingways even if some of the dialog was lacking. I think I won’t listen to anything else that uses Darling so frequently. I’m sure if she was a nurse she was a little more communicative than Hemingways portrayal

Tremendous narration

John Slattery aptly captures the cadence and mood in of this beautiful novel. I normally don’t care for narrators who do different voices, but Slattery’s characters were distinct and moving.
