Publisher's summary

The best American novel to emerge from World War I, A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse.

Hemingway's frank portrayal of the love between Lieutenant Henry and Catherine Barkley, caught in the inexorable sweep of war, glows with an intensity unrivaled in modern literature, while his description of the German attack on Caporetto, of lines of fired men marching in the rain, hungry, weary, and demoralized, is one of the greatest moments in literary history.

A story of love and pain, of loyalty and desertion, A Farewell to Arms, written when he was 30 years old, represents a new romanticism for Hemingway.

Well narrated epic story

Amazing classic story. Would have been better if some cuss words were NOT removed. I may not have noticed but other reviewers mentioned this not being unabridged and there were a few very obvious places where the editor removed a word and that left a verbal gap. Why remove these words? Middle school kids hear worse things every day. It needs to be told you in its Entirety. Excellent narration. Still giving 5 stars but whomever edited or produced it needs to understand classics like this should stay unabridged for full storytelling impact.

A Masterpiece by a Master Storyteller

Anyone who loves a work of true art will appreciate this novel. It is(in my view) Ernest Hemingway’s greatest book. Full of love, action, pain and beauty. Told in simple yet passionate prose, this is what truly magnificent writers are able to get across to their intended audience.

Timeless story. Performance of main character flat

Loved the book. Disappointed by the performance for the main character. at times it sounded like reading a train timetable.

Wow! The great Hemingway

In the style of Hemingway,
I turned the app on, the download was easily obtainable, my cat sat next to me, he was warm and soft and old. There were many details, the story was sharp and to the point, many lived, and some died. It made me happy, it made me sad 😢. I loved it.

The reader was marvelous

The voices and accents he performed were brilliant and way he read it gave Hemingway‘s writing such a clear tone, highlighting the characterization. It was so enjoyable.

Incredible writing.

Can’t believe I haven’t read this. Hemingway has certainly earned his reputation. The writing is amazing. Just the right amount of words—magic. John Slattery does a great job.

Twice as long if you read between the lines.

This is a case study in the emotions of a outwardly emotionless, sensible man during a difficult time of his life. Even the protagonist's inner monologue is, for the most part, "matter of fact." Hemingway leaves it up to the reader to add the missing pieces, all the while describing the landscape and scene beautifully.

The narration is done very well.

FABULOUS

Understandably a classic—the story line, character development, and the ability of the author to make the reader feel present in the narrative. The narrator gave a wonderful performance—a convincing tone delivered with pristine clarity. Highly recommended.
