Editorial reviews

Frank Muller’s performance is outstanding in this audiobook of Dickens’s holiday classic. Muller seizes every opportunity to extract emotion, meaning, nuance, and subtlety from each word and each situation. Each character has a different voice, each moment has its own intensity, and there is no better "Bah! Humbug!" anywhere in audio. Muller’s intelligent interpretation takes the well-known story and breathes new life into each scene. He makes listening to each description, whether of an unforgettable person such as Tiny Tim, a recognizable place such as the Cratchit house, or a familiar moment such as Christmas morning, as fresh as if one is hearing it for the first time.

Publisher's summary

Charles Dickens’ Christmas classic—written in time for the 1843 holiday season—sold out its initial printing of 6,000 copies in one day. It remains Dickens’ most widely read and best-loved work, guaranteed to warm and uplift with the simplicity of its message and the depth of its honest truths. Bah! Humbug! It’s Christmas Eve and miserly Ebenezer Scrooge is in a foul temper—good cheer and joyful spending turn his very insides to vinegar. But before Scrooge sees the dawn break on yet another miserable Christmas morning, he will have come face-to-face with a parade of startling apparitions, and most disconcerting of all—himself. Dickens fills his entertaining Christmas ghost story with unforgettable characters and richly drawn settings. Veteran narrator Frank Muller provides the perfect voice for the mean-spirited Scrooge and his frightful visitors.

still the best

This version is still the best, performed by an early giant in audio artistry (God rest his soul).
Pacing is excellent. Inflections just right in all the right places. Voice is classic and he modulates it tastefully for each character and moment.
Current celebs may make their attempts at this classic story but Frank Muller is still the king.

Frank Muller sounds like Scrooge would sound

Critiquing the book makes no sense -- everyone knows the story. In this case, though, the narration makes the story. I think Charles Dickens himself would have hired Frank Muller to read this book to everyone each Christmas.

This is what Christmas sounds like

I first heard this version of A Christmas Carol in 1989 after checking it out from the Dallas library. No other version I have heard since then was as satisfying. I couldn’t remember who the publisher was or who the narrator was but I never stopped trying to find it again. The moment I listened to the sample I knew my long search was finally over. I shed tears of joy throughout the production. It was just as perfect as I remembered. After decades of yearning, I have finally come “home” for Christmas.

Masterful narration.

What did you love best about A Christmas Carol?

I loved the narration by Frank Muller.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Scrooge, because of the change in his attitude towards all humanity.

Have you listened to any of Frank Muller’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have. He is by far the best narrator I have ever heard. This ranks as one of his finest reads.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

If you hear this, I would highly recommend all of Frank Muller's other books.

Listen Every Year

We listen to A Christmas Carol at least once each Christmas season. This is the best audiobook of the story we’ve found. None of the others even begin to compare. The narrator brings the story to life beautifully.

Simply the best

There are a million options out there, with ‘special’ narrations by famous people. But Frank Muller was simply the best of them all. He may have other books with flashier characters (King’s Green Mike for one) but he could do Dickens as good as anyone. This is the very best Christmas Carol to be found!
