In French caracole means "prancing"; in English, "caper." Both words perfectly describe this high-spirited erotic adventure. In Caracole, White invents an entire world where country gentry languish in decaying mansions and foppish intellectuals exchange lovers and gossip in an occupied city that resembles both Paris under the Nazis and 1980s New York. To that city comes Gabriel, an awkward boy from the provinces whose social naïveté and sexual ardor make him endlessly attractive to a variety of patrons and paramours.

When Memoirs was first published in 1975, it created quite a bit of turbulence in the media - though long self-identified as a gay man, Williams' candor about his love life, sexual encounters, and drug use was found shocking in and of itself, and such revelations by America's greatest living playwright were called "a raw display of private life" by the New York Times Book Review. As it turns out, Williams' look back at his life is not quite so scandalous as it once seemed.

Lecture on '70s literature?
I love Edmund White's novels, but it was hard to struggle through this one. Large portions of the books are about subjects which are only intriguing for scholars of literature or philisophy.

Interesting Reflections and Memoirs
Would you listen to City Boy again? Why?
It has its great moments and interesting tidbits of information about NYC and it's gay and non-gay history. I enjoyed hearing this audiobook.

Pretense upon pretense.
I love Edmund white but this was a recycling or amalgam of several excerpts from his novels. And the narrator: awful, uppity, and ultimately a bore.
