Editorial reviews

"Marc is living proof that you can be a marketing and business whiz and still be a true artist." (CNBC)

Publisher's summary

Instructive as it is innovative, Unlabel will empower you to channel your creativity, find the courage to defy convention, and summon the confidence to act and compete in any environment. This blueprint will teach you how to grow both creatively and commercially by testing your personal brand against the principles of the Authenticity Formula. Marc Eckō shares the bruising mistakes and remarkable triumphs that reveal the truth behind his success, growing from a misfit kid airbrushing T-shirts in his parents' garage to the bold creator of two hugely successful branded platforms: Eckō Unltd. and Complex Media. As Eckō explains, it's not enough to simply merge your inner artist with business savvy—you must understand the anatomy of a brand, starting with its authentic spine.

With Unlabel, you will learn how to discover your own voice by overcoming fear and taking action, what it means to deliver on your promises, why failure is essential, how to understand how your product or service makes people feel, and how to recognize if your nostalgia for the past is hampering your ability to envision your future.

Unlabel is a bold and honest approach to building an authentic personal brand and growing a bootstrap start-up into a sustainable business.

Caused Me To Learn A Lot About Myself

What did you love best about Unlabel?

In my search for the perfect business venture, I've read book after book by authors like Robert Kiyosaki and Donald Trump. This was the first book I've read that talks about the bare bones of building a business. It takes off all of the fluff, and throws reality in your face. It made me realize that I have no desire to be in a position of such power. I'm more like Marc's twin sister, Marci. I'd be the voice of reason and keep the business organized, rather than being the person with the billion dollar ideas and having to face the gatekeepers.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Unlabel?

One of the most memorable moments for me was when Marc showed up to a business meeting high on marijuana, and Seth had to make him realize whose lives he was jeopardizing because of that decision. Marc is honest and wears his mistakes likes badges of honor. After all, we are all who we are because of our experiences. Changing it would change the course of history. What's important, is what we learn from those mistakes.

Which character – as performed by Todd Haberkorn and Marc Ecko – was your favorite?

I loved all the characters. Everyone was real, and I can appreciate what each has gone through.

Any additional comments?

I downloaded this book out of laziness and curiosity. It showed up on a "you might like these" list. I was pleasantly surprised and found myself wanting to listen on weekends, instead of just during my commute. I had never heard of Marc Ecko or the Rhino or Ecko unlimited, but now I feel like I know a bit about all of these. Thanks for sharing your story Marc!!! - from a Southern California mom, wife, and employee who's learning how to find her creative self in this world.

A sincere story with useful wisdom

Any additional comments?

The story was well told and I really feel like I know Marc Ecko now. I had no idea who the guy was until I listened to this. This was one audio-book which I would have loved to see the images he talks about throughout :)

As far as the performance, there was a some goofiness when chapter titles were SHOUTED in a corny fashion and a few words were mis-pronounced: "Hill-Figure" and "ERNEST and Young" ...
But overall, a very cool story of a confident yet somewhat humble seeming business man.

A+++

This book is educational about the highs & lows about entrepreneurship in all aspects. It was a great listen & learned a lot that I can apply in my own world. Love to hear the fails & the wins on the journey to the top. Listening gave me ideas & motivation to go for it…All the way. I will reference this book & probably give it another listen. Great job Marc Ecko.
