"The strength of this book is that it is a straightforward motivational tool. He provides the brutally direct truth about the hard work it takes to become free of debt, and his directness is a great part of the book's charm." (Publishers Weekly)
This book is mostly common sense. It is written in a way that seems the author is speaking down to his reader. Painful to listen to the narrator. Southern drawl is at times barking the words to the listener. Definitely wouldn't recommend.
"Read to relax"
Some friends of ours introduced to Dave Ramsey's book and on that very day I downloaded it to my Kindle. T wasn't good enough I had to get it on audio as well. I wanted to not only read it, but I wanted to hear it? to digest it and for it to become a new way of thinking for my life. We will be debt free and we will have the comfortable and secure retirement
After listening to the Total Money Makeover, I realize that I need to take control of my spending and get rid of my debt. I just went onto his website and purchased his Financial Peace University. I have over $300,000 debt in medical school loans, car lease payments and personal loans. I'm ready to "live like no one else, so that I can live like no one else."
The total money makeover is a good starting point for people confused about finances. This book has a bit of a spiritual tendency but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Psychology shows that giving is an important aspect to a healthy life. Dave approach is it from more of a spiritual standpoint but I consider it true nonetheless.
I wasn't a big fan of chapters 1-6 in this audio book, but I URGE you.....stick with it. Listen to chapters 6-end. It has the potential to change the course of your life.
This book was recommended to me by my boss when I got into debt and was stressed out about money. It is the best recommendation I have ever received. I plan on taking control of my money using the tactics and lifestyle habits talked about in this book.
"Thank you Dave Ramsey"
This is a quick update to those in need of hope. I wrote a review back in June last year and now wish i could give this book more than 5 stars!!! We are now debt free, thanks to Dave's principles layed out clearly in this book.
"Had to give up listening"
I would imagine it would be as very interesting and helpful subject but I haven't read it so can't compare, the audio version is unbearable due to the shouting and terrible dialogue.
I haven't and will steer clear
Performance was awful, shouting, talked to the listener as if an idiot. Generally came across like he was preaching and forcing something down my throat.
It would have to all be in massive letters with lots and lots of explanation marks !!!!!!!!
Be worth publishing this with a different reader as I think it would have been really good but I just couldn't continue listening.
"Some good advice"
Some very good advice but with a condescending tone which is probably what some us need to get our finances in order. The author seems to be anti OPM which some may think is important for wealth building.
"Good sound advice"
It's what many people need to hear. No rocket science. Just straight talking. Short and to the point. The tough talking could feel a little OTT for some but it is not unbearable; I found it entertaining and used appropriately to stress points. Will pay for itself many times over
"Good Sound System...."
...but Dave Ramsey's narration i found annoying. It's all well and good that he performed in such a way as to make the listener feel like he was talking to one personally, but given the choice I'd rather he just read the text up without the drama...
Whatever the case, I would definitely recommend to anyone needing a good sound financial system....
"A Common Sense Approach to Handling Money."
I've listened to this book a few times now and Dave is clearly passionate about teaching others that it is possible to live a debt free life. I used to think that I was quite good with my money (not that I had much) but this tough, common sense guide revealed to me that I could have done so much better. Although, no longer in my youth Dave also makes it clear that it's not too late to start.
It was really helpful practical guide to personal finance really accessible and potentially life transforming. Give it a go I did and loved it
"A must - Educational, engaging and fun"
I have hear about Dame Ramsey before and now listened to this rather short book and I was really satisfied. Dave's voice, ideas, processes to get better with money are life changing, so motivational, definitely must listen for everyone. I strongly recommend, I have enjoyed every minute of it!
So easy to follow.
Personal stories, Dave himself.
Don't only listen but put in action ;-)
It took me a while to get over the slightly aggressive American tone - I guess passion would be a better word than agressive. But the concept is simple and makes perfect sense.
"Helped us get in shape"
I found out about Dave Ramsey about seven months ago (December 2012) and from the first podcast I downloaded for his radio talk show, I knew this guy was different. He is genuine, honest, informed and tells it like it is. My husband and I had debt of about $28,000 which we werent too concerned about but had tried to pay off and somehow no matter what we did it just never seemed to go away. We enrolled for FPU online around March 2013 and wow, what a class!!! We decided to pay off all our debt but for some reason stalled. I then went ahead and bought this book (audio) about a month after we'd completed FPU, something about the way he explained debt and just how restrictive it was clicked deeper. I was on a coach on the way to work, by the time we arrived I had a tear in my eye and knew that I knew that I knew that we were paying our debt off that day. Fortunately we had the money to clear all our debt and just went ahead and did it. I cannot describe the feeling. Walking around debt free is totally liberating. I would never have done it if it werent for FPU or this book. For some reason we thought earning 0.5% in a savings account would beat the 7-10% interest rates we were paying on the debt. We just hadnt done the Maths. We have now changed our habits and are already living like no one lese so later we get to live like no else.
Thank you Dave Ramsey and may God bless and your wonderful family for the wonderful work you are doing to enlighten those of us who had somehow gotten degrees in D.U.M.B.
