"The strength of this book is that it is a straightforward motivational tool. He provides the brutally direct truth about the hard work it takes to become free of debt, and his directness is a great part of the book's charm." (Publishers Weekly)
Wow! This book will be a game changer for me! My parents grew up poor and uneducated and taught me the same. However, I knew at a young age that I wanted more out of my life than that! Always been more concerned with making money rather than managing it! In fact I have ran and hid from budgeting! Not realizing the reason why was because I never learned how to do it! No longer! I am ready to apply!!
It's an approach on using your income as a wealth building tool that I have NEVER heard before! It goes contrary to our culture of buy it now with debt!
Thanks Dave for the guidelines...my wife and I started this month!
Live like no one else so later you can live like no one else.
Money management is 20% mental and 80% behavioral.
There are people who have the appearance of wealth, but really are in tons of debt.
Don't become an indentured servant to your debt.
Give back and make a difference.
It is a great book that everybody should read or listen. Dave talk about how to get out of debt and build wealth. I recommend this book.
I would listen to it again. Dave is fun to listen to and has very good ideas and advice. My wife and I are following his suggestions.
There is absolutely no reason that God and scripture need to be sprinkled throughout the book. It isn't everywhere all the time, but Dave sells a lot of books and training to churches, so he puts in enough God to get in the door. If the rest of the book weren't so enjoyable, I would have stopped listening. He isn't selling rocket science--it is tried and true stuff that works. However, he drives it home and is motivational.
Dave claims that God brought a Jaguar car back into his life after many years of having to sell one. FWIW, I don't think Jesus would have and use for a or driven an idol like a Jag--his rewards are in heaven--and simply looking on cars.com can find many Jaguars quite easily without divine intervention.
Dave does a very good job of delivering.
What a wake up call this book is! I was able to identify with many of the stories and testimonies. Bonus: I played this during breakfast and I was finally able to engage my husband when in the past he always showed resistance when I talked about Dave or any other financial topic! Now he has agreed to baby steps :) and he says to our son who has severe autism and loves to repeat anything you teach him, "son, what is the word of the day?" And my sweet boy replies "DEBT FREE!!!" Haha And then hubby says, so we can leave like no other and I have to say... Like no one else Mike, like no one else....
I loved it. Dave makes you face yourself. No sugar coating.Just blunt honesty. Great listen.
Ramsey's ideas are not brilliant, new or some big secret – they're basically sound money logic.
But the way he presents it (and him being the narrator really adds to this) is just wonderful: he shakes you up out of your lazy lending habits and motives you to take a shovel through your budget.
Really nice book to listen once more every time you need that push to get your finances in shape.
"Thank you Dave Ramsey"
This is a quick update to those in need of hope. I wrote a review back in June last year and now wish i could give this book more than 5 stars!!! We are now debt free, thanks to Dave's principles layed out clearly in this book.
"Some good advice"
Some very good advice but with a condescending tone which is probably what some us need to get our finances in order. The author seems to be anti OPM which some may think is important for wealth building.
"Good sound advice"
It's what many people need to hear. No rocket science. Just straight talking. Short and to the point. The tough talking could feel a little OTT for some but it is not unbearable; I found it entertaining and used appropriately to stress points. Will pay for itself many times over
"Good Sound System...."
...but Dave Ramsey's narration i found annoying. It's all well and good that he performed in such a way as to make the listener feel like he was talking to one personally, but given the choice I'd rather he just read the text up without the drama...
Whatever the case, I would definitely recommend to anyone needing a good sound financial system....
"A Common Sense Approach to Handling Money."
I've listened to this book a few times now and Dave is clearly passionate about teaching others that it is possible to live a debt free life. I used to think that I was quite good with my money (not that I had much) but this tough, common sense guide revealed to me that I could have done so much better. Although, no longer in my youth Dave also makes it clear that it's not too late to start.
It was really helpful practical guide to personal finance really accessible and potentially life transforming. Give it a go I did and loved it
"A must - Educational, engaging and fun"
I have hear about Dame Ramsey before and now listened to this rather short book and I was really satisfied. Dave's voice, ideas, processes to get better with money are life changing, so motivational, definitely must listen for everyone. I strongly recommend, I have enjoyed every minute of it!
So easy to follow.
Personal stories, Dave himself.
Don't only listen but put in action ;-)
It took me a while to get over the slightly aggressive American tone - I guess passion would be a better word than agressive. But the concept is simple and makes perfect sense.
"Helped us get in shape"
I found out about Dave Ramsey about seven months ago (December 2012) and from the first podcast I downloaded for his radio talk show, I knew this guy was different. He is genuine, honest, informed and tells it like it is. My husband and I had debt of about $28,000 which we werent too concerned about but had tried to pay off and somehow no matter what we did it just never seemed to go away. We enrolled for FPU online around March 2013 and wow, what a class!!! We decided to pay off all our debt but for some reason stalled. I then went ahead and bought this book (audio) about a month after we'd completed FPU, something about the way he explained debt and just how restrictive it was clicked deeper. I was on a coach on the way to work, by the time we arrived I had a tear in my eye and knew that I knew that I knew that we were paying our debt off that day. Fortunately we had the money to clear all our debt and just went ahead and did it. I cannot describe the feeling. Walking around debt free is totally liberating. I would never have done it if it werent for FPU or this book. For some reason we thought earning 0.5% in a savings account would beat the 7-10% interest rates we were paying on the debt. We just hadnt done the Maths. We have now changed our habits and are already living like no one lese so later we get to live like no else.
Thank you Dave Ramsey and may God bless and your wonderful family for the wonderful work you are doing to enlighten those of us who had somehow gotten degrees in D.U.M.B.
