Publisher's summary

Strong leaders at all levels within an organization are a requisite for business success. Yet the leadership pipeline—the internal architecture for growing leaders—is often broken or non-existent. This updated edition of the best-selling The Leadership Pipeline has been revised to help address the challenges of today’s business environment. Anchored in experience, it offers a tested model for planning leadership succession and development that has proven to get results. The authors draw on their work at more than one hundred international companies to report on what has been learned in the ten years since the first edition of The Leadership Pipeline was published. They show how a company can develop leadership in each layer of their organization by defining the different skills required as leaders move from one level to the next. They explain how time should be applied differently, how work values required for success must change, and clearly illustrate what inappropriate leadership looks like at each step. In addition, the authors answer commonly asked questions and add new insights from their in-the-field research. The Leadership Pipeline shows how today’s companies can keep their leadership “pipeline” filled and flowing to ensure a steady supply of skilled leaders throughout the organization.

Critic reviews

The Leadership Pipeline has the ability to transform a company. The leadership concepts are enduring and simple enough that managers at every level can quickly grasp what it means to be a highly effective leader. The authors, Charan, Drotter, and Noel, are true leadership development ‘gurus’ and continue to provide us with the best thinking in developing the world’s future generation of business leaders.” (Abby Curnow-Chavez, vice president of talent management, Newmont Mining Corporation)

Missing Parts

Overall the book itself is good but the audio rendition is missing large parts of the book if you compare to the physical copy. This should have been caught in a review of the work before it was sold.

Insightful !

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The book has a lotof details and information onthe different levels of leadership. This book is very useful for organizationsto structure themselves.

What other book might you compare The Leadership Pipeline 2E to and why?

I cant compare it to any otherbook purely becausethe detailsare technical in nature and the principles for different levels of management are broken down into stages.

What aspect of Walter Dixon’s performance would you have changed?

The narration aspect. It was exteemely tiring to listen to this because the voice was very monotonous.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

This book is about management concepts at different levels of an individuals career and the tools he requires. Dont this can be a film.

Any additional comments?

The audiobook was informative but the narration was honestly boring. It definitely needed livening up.

Great Leadershop Reference

Thank you. The book opened my eyes to the possibility as well as my responsibility as I move into the functional manager position. This book will be my reference for developing my managers and standards for instituting a leadership pipeline. 👏

Boring and repetitive

The narrator is very boring to listen to - so much so that I kept zoning out and having to rewind. The content is good in the beginning but was very repetitive halfway through all the way to the end. This book could be cut in half. I would not recommend it.

Too much HR - too little leadership

Very nice framework, which makes a lot of sense.

However, the book is clearly written by HR people for HR people. Examples are too theoretical/principal and lacks real leadership examples.

Good for structure, less good for leadership development inspiration.

Don’t really believe in the message

The book was well performed. A little slow but when you can turn up the speed it works out well. I just didn’t really ever feel convinced. I think there are some good points made in the book but overall I think other books are better. This seemed like an opinion piece that selected results that fit their examples. Other similar books use imperial based evidence and have data to back their findings. Also I believe project oxygen from google is a better framework for understanding teams and business management.
