Publisher's summary

The world’s most trusted guide for leaders in transition.

Transitions are a critical time for leaders. In fact, most agree that moving into a new role is the biggest challenge a manager will face. While transitions offer a chance to start fresh and make needed changes in an organization, they also place leaders in a position of acute vulnerability. Missteps made during the crucial first three months in a new role can jeopardize or even derail your success.

In this updated and expanded version of the international bestseller The First 90 Days, Michael D. Watkins offers proven strategies for conquering the challenges of transitions - no matter where you are in your career. Watkins, a noted expert on leadership transitions and adviser to senior leaders in all types of organizations, also addresses today’s increasingly demanding professional landscape, where managers face not only more frequent transitions but also steeper expectations once they step into their new jobs.

By walking you through every aspect of the transition scenario, Watkins identifies the most common pitfalls new leaders encounter and provides the tools and strategies you need to avoid them. You’ll learn how to secure critical early wins, an important first step in establishing yourself in your new role. Each chapter also includes checklists, practical tools, and self-assessments to help you assimilate key lessons and apply them to your own situation.

Whether you’re starting a new job, being promoted from within, embarking on an overseas assignment, or being tapped as CEO, how you manage your transition will determine whether you succeed or fail. Use this book as your trusted guide.

From DC - San Diego a great cultural change

Outstanding book. Provided an excellent frame work for transitioning into a new organization and culture. I transitioned from being a military leader into a corporate leadership role. The book helped me tremendously! Highly recommended.

I wish I had this book ten years ago!

Better late than never, though! I feel as though the narrator is a little hard-ball but the content is really practical and I have found it helpful.

Good advice for one in transition to new position

Would you consider the audio edition of The First 90 Days, Updated and Expanded to be better than the print version?

My son recommended I read this when I became employed for the company which purchased my own company. I had many things to say, advice to share, tips to enlighten, etc. I had my own opinions about the market we both had shared for the last 20 years. In the end, my new owner wanted to hear very little from me along those lines.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The First 90 Days, Updated and Expanded?

The lesson: What worked for you THEN (in the other position, in my case, "CEO") won't work for you NOW.

Definitely Helpes

I used this framework for my new job. It definitely kept me focused and structured during my first few months. The only thing I wish it would do is give you a link to follow along with. Maybe I does and I missed it, but it would of been useful.

information driven.

great but not a story book really a self hr evaluation of transition. while learning about your strengths and weaknesses, to understand others and how to use the team to help you and the company grow. This book also does a few surface case studies of a few employee's who transitioned into Management but keep the employee mindset. The narrator for was not my first choice but I got something from it.

Need the book also

It was pretty dry and conceptually burdensome in many parts; need the book to follow more closely—I may purchase and do a second pass. That said I think there is a valuable framework here given you are able to dedicate the time to understand and implement it completely.
