Publisher's summary

Every new project (or job, or hobby, or company) starts out exciting and fun. Then it gets harder and less fun, until it hits a low point: really hard, and not much fun at all.

And then you find yourself asking if the goal is even worth the hassle. Maybe you're in a Dip: a temporary setback that you will overcome if you keep pushing. But maybe it's really a Cul-de-Sac, which will never get better, no matter how hard you try.

According to best-selling author Seth Godin, what really sets superstars apart from everyone else is the ability to escape dead ends quickly while staying focused and motivated when it really counts.

Winners quit fast, quit often, and quit without guilt: until they commit to beating the right Dip for the right reasons. In fact, winners seek out the Dip. They realize that the bigger the barrier, the bigger the reward for getting past it. If you can become number one in your niche, you'll get more than your fair share of profits, glory, and long-term security.

Losers, on the other hand, fall into two basic traps. Either they fail to stick out the Dip - they get to the moment of truth and then give up - or they never even find the right Dip to conquer.

Whether you're a graphic designer, a sales rep, an athlete, or an aspiring CEO, this fun little book will help you figure out if you're in a Dip that's worthy of your time, effort, and talents. If you are, The Dip will inspire you to hang tough. If not, it will help you find the courage to quit so you can be number one at something else.

Seth Godin doesn't claim to have all the answers. But he will teach you how to ask the right questions.

Some good points regarding influencing the market

The first one hour seem like a big drag, something that could have been said in 5 minutes has been stretched over one hour. the last 20 minutes are useful in the sense of helping you decide when to make a change in your life. if you are looking for a top-notch book to help you push yourself past obstacles then listen to David Goggins's 'can't hurt me'.

Brilliant perspective

This book put things into a much needed perspective for me. It’s clear, concise, and puts you into action mode. Of course, you have to be able to interpret your own situation in these terms, but if you can do that then you will be better off for it.

Interesting perspective

I read this book within the context of ministry development.... I am still trying to wrap my mind around the premise and it’s application. to my situation.

A book worth reading/ listening

The subject of the book is 'inspirational' in its own way. My only analogy would be telling an actor to 'break a leg' before a performance. In this book Seth Godin tells the reader to quit, especially when what you are pursuing is getting comfortable. This topic is revisited multiple times throughout the book and can seem repetitive in places but pushes through with different perceptions of this idea. I got recommended this book and I'm doing the same to you.

good reminder

a good reminder of the slog that it takes to be successful. quick and to the point with some repetitiveness, but mostly to drive certain points.

Short and simple

I have listened to this short and concise book for the second time and it doesn’t disappoint. It is relieving to be reaffirmed that the constant suffering you feel in the short term is all going to pay off! Great read if you need some quick motivation and want to understand where to go next.

Good bit brief.

It is a good synopsis of when and why to quit and why not to quit. However it is quite brief and the content could have been dealt w in a well written article...
