What the Critics Say

"The most trusted advisors chief information officers have are other CIOs, and Nicholas Colisto capitalizes beautifully on that fact in The CIO Playbook. This highly readable guide to succeeding in one of the toughest jobs in the C-suite features a step-by-step framework that is practical, focused, and quite specific. The strategies Nicholas describes come to life through anecdotes and straightforward advice from many of the industry's most respected CIOs who share their advice on everything from partnering with business colleagues to innovating and delivering results." (Maryfran Johnson, Editor in Chief, CIO Magazine and Events)

"The CIO Playbook is a must-read for technology management executives in all industries. It provides concrete solutions for reshaping the partnership between information systems organizations and the business to enable growth through innovation. It is a practical guide to navigating risks in an environment where technology is evolving continuously and the economic landscape is transforming routinely. Nicholas Colisto managed to weave strategy and tactics in a book that is both thought provoking and applicable." (Gabrielle Wolfson, Chief Information Officer, Panasonic Corporation of North America)

"The CIO Playbook is a no-fluff, high-value read. Nicholas has done a great job in leveraging collective intelligence to first identify the real and pressing issues that IT leaders struggle with, and then offer pragmatic strategies to address them. A very well-structured treasure chest of knowledge and insights that every current and aspiring IT leader must own and refer to." (Sanjog Aul, Host, CIO Talk Radio)

    "Playbook for the aspiring CIO"

This book has good stories and is full of quality and useful information for the right audience. I would expect any seasoned CIO to have the experience to back most of what is in this playbook. I found the playbook to be mostly remedial tips on governance, organization buildings, management, and so on. What this book does provide is a good high-level overview of the functions necessary to run IT. I could envision it as a training tool for aspiring CIO's or the up and coming managers of IT units to better understand the cross functional working of their division.

A note of interest is a section on portfolio management. Useful for IT portfolio managers such as an architecture team but also applicable to PMO leaders delivering a potfolio of technology projects. Whether that PMO be a part of IT or not.

If a CIO comes into office using this as a guide for their division plan, without the appropriate experience to deploy the recommendations, I suspect that CIO will have plenty of learning ahead in a best case scenario. This book can be useful but I found it to be remedial. The thought came to mind that it may be aimed at the CIO with deep experience and a proven track record in another business function but new to IT. I think it may be best used as a training tool as younger leaders develop their experience rather than targeting the CIO.

    "Great IT Leadership advice"

Coilsto gives great advise on how to make IT a strategic partner with the rest of the business rather then a cost center service provider. His advice of not calling other business units your customers to avoid falling into the trap of being seen as an outsider is something that things very true for me. As an IT Leader this is invaluable reading that helped justify many of the concepts of driving true business value out of IT I have absorbed over the years. A must read for fellow IT Leaders.

    Any additional comments?

The only thing I wish the book had is an adobe sheet with a summary of the major topics.
