Publisher's summary

Female entrepreneurs are a growing force to be reckoned with. Each year, more and more women take the initiative and start their own business ventures - at twice the rate of men. Women continue to reshape the business world with innovative models, both large and small. So why is there a lack of clear-cut, expert advice aimed at this dynamic female audience?

In The Boss of You, Emira Mears and Lauren Bacon, founders of Raised Eyebrow Web Studios Inc. and co-editors of the well-known webzine Soapboxgirls, set out to answer this question. As intelligent entrepreneurs and straightforward writers, Emira and Lauren offer insight into beginning - and sustaining - small businesses from the female perspective. Peppered with stories from women who have been there, from cautionary tales to success stories, The Boss of You provides readers with real advice and career options that will allow them to live their values and achieve their own version of work-life balance.

Whether you are an established professional or an entrepreneurial newbie, The Boss of You is the definitive guidebook for starting, maintaining, and enjoying your own business.

Step-by-step guide

This is a wonderful, experienced, and organized step-by-step guide on setting up your own business. It takes you from creating the product, balance the balance sheet, to developing a strong relationship with your employees. This book really speaks to women because it emphasises that it's ok to stay small. you don't have to expand and open a new store every month if you choose not to. This is essential to all those who are starting up their own business!

MOST AMAZING BUSINESS BOOK I HAVE EVER PICKED UP!

I have read business books.. and a LOT of them! This was the first to break EVERY step down, spoke to women, but still kept every concept seriously business related. I mean "REAL" business related.
For the first time, I understand business finances..i've been doing it WRONG the entire time! I have also NOT been paying myself, a HUGE no, no, EVEN if your a one person star-up! You MUST read this book if you want to start RIGHT! Like I said, I have read what have been touted to be the "best" business books on the market... not one of them tops this one!

Phenomenal Read!

Where does The Boss of You rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I would rank a close 3 in my audible library! But this is the first business book Ive bought and listened to.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Both emira and lauren are my favorite as they are the authors of the book.

Have you listened to any of Therese Plummer’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not. This is my first and she really makes the book come alive.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me laugh all the way through it as its not only very informative but very down to earth and relatable.

Any additional comments?

Great book for any woman who wants to start, run and maintain her own business. I highly recommend it.

Recommend!

Very good information... the only reason that I did not give a 5 star rating is because of the narration. The reader sounds like she's talking to a child a little too often for my taste. Otherwise, it has some very basic operational information for the new women owned business!!

What about Therese Plummer’s performance did you like?

Keeps it entertaining with her tone

Any additional comments?

This was a good book of affirmation for my ideas and I really enjoyed the real businesses they use as examples. I do wish it went more into legalities and such; however, they do offer further resources at the end that I will have to look in to. Overall it was great and enjoyable during a long drive!

Annoying...

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I found that while some of the advice may have been useful, the general tone was really pandering. There were lots of moments of the author calling her readers "ladies" in this "we know it's hard for you to do this, but just try a little harder, okay?" kind of way.

Would you recommend The Boss of You to your friends? Why or why not?

Nope! As a woman in business, I wanted some encouraging and bolstering advice, and I felt like the whole book was apologizing for me not being strong enough to have big ambitions in business. I agree that sometimes it's good to keep businesses small and work that way, but there was so much talk about how emotional women are and all the stereotypes that make business a hard world for women to inhabit. Business books I've read that were for any gender (i.e. men, of course) were much more useful, and I did like Sheryl Sandberg's Lean In for its practical advice for women in business.

Would you be willing to try another one of Therese Plummer’s performances?

Sure, she did fine with her material, and I'm sure she was directed to be a little more emphatic or overdramatic because of the writing.
