Publisher's summary

Amoral, cunning, ruthless, and instructive, this piercing work distills 3,000 years of the history of power into 48 well-explicated laws. This bold volume outlines the laws of power in their unvarnished essence, synthesizing the philosophies of Machiavelli, Sun-tzu, Carl von Clausewitz, and other great thinkers. Some laws teach the need for prudence ("Law 1: Never Outshine the Master") and the virtue of stealth ("Law 3: Conceal Your Intentions"); many demand the total absence of mercy ("Law 15: Crush Your Enemy Totally"). But like it or not, all have applications in real life. Illustrated through the tactics of Queen Elizabeth I, Henry Kissinger, P. T. Barnum, and other famous figures who have wielded, or been victimized by, power, these laws will fascinate any listener interested in gaining, observing, or defending against ultimate control.

Great Listen but contradictory to my beliefs.

Not for the squeamish, it is a great listen and you learn a bit about how some other people apply this to the world.

The author wrote this in a way that made it seem like everything to do with power requires deception, which I don't agree with, but if you are able to see the value of the principles outlined with or without the "inherent need" for deception, I think their's a lot to be gained.

Excellent listen

You don't have to agree with the laws and methods but its the truth! And knowing how to combat/ the enemy is the right starting point.
These laws can be seen in all types of relationships one has in life.

A Must Read/Listen.

Great psychology tools to know the narrator does a great job at setting the tone and the author did a great job at putting it all in perspective with history examples.

Part 1 of Many Books

This book is merely a step in your process of freeing yourself from the enslavement of the mind and in part the body. The book of power really helped me as I was raised in a cult and never subjected to the thinking or life that this book illustrates. Being so handicapped I found myself without real power. Now that I’ve read it listened to it and reflected on all its teachings, I’m getting farther in life than I ever thought possible. This really is a tool for all mankind to practice in conjunction with all the other books in sequence. This is the starting point on your journey of understanding the art of war by sun tzu. Power is the first step for you cannot war or need peace without the corruption of power. You cannot use power with out then knowing war so his 33 strategies of war is the obvious second book. You cannot have power and know war see war without then needing to find zen or peace. The 3 pillars of zen by Philip kapleau is the third book before the art of war can be read and digested fully. Follow these and you’ll rise to where ever your imagination and hard diligent work can get you.

Good book but the reading is dumb

The reader uses a sinister tone and it makes the book seem more dark. It’s actually pretty silly. There’s some great history and useful human observations if you can get past the ridiculous performance.
