Publisher's summary

Amoral, cunning, ruthless, and instructive, this piercing work distills 3,000 years of the history of power into 48 well-explicated laws. This bold volume outlines the laws of power in their unvarnished essence, synthesizing the philosophies of Machiavelli, Sun-tzu, Carl von Clausewitz, and other great thinkers. Some laws teach the need for prudence ("Law 1: Never Outshine the Master") and the virtue of stealth ("Law 3: Conceal Your Intentions"); many demand the total absence of mercy ("Law 15: Crush Your Enemy Totally"). But like it or not, all have applications in real life. Illustrated through the tactics of Queen Elizabeth I, Henry Kissinger, P. T. Barnum, and other famous figures who have wielded, or been victimized by, power, these laws will fascinate any listener interested in gaining, observing, or defending against ultimate control.

Classic

If you don’t know then you don’t need to know. Greene is a superb author and philosopher basing his writings on relevant historical non-fiction.

Wannabe Machiavelli for Basic B**ches

Extremely basic. Everyone tries to copy Machiavelli but I have yet to read a book that comes near, and certainly not this one. Pretty much the only new(ish) thought out of this is "never outdo the master" which to me is just common sense (to their face), but whatever. That's the first rule in here, and its all downhill from there. Obvious and pedantic.

Outstanding book!

This book was well worth the purchase price. Each “rule” is historically-centered, researched, erudite and insightful. I learned much about both others and myself by listening to it. Highly recommend.

I 100% feel like this should have been given to me at my highschool graduation. it would have made the next several years significantly less treacherous.

Average presentation

Some interesting points but rather too abstract for my taste. Who is the audience this was meant to reach? Machievan with pop psychology mixed in not very applicable in today world. I was entertained but not enlightened.

It's very direct and has great examples for further comprehension of the laws.

It is very researched and robust material. This book contains an astonishing collection of knowledge based on true events and common human psychology. It is thorough and serves as a great manual/resource for practicioners of the game of power.
