Publisher's summary

A guide to becoming a recognized expert in your field.

Too many people believe that if they keep their heads down and work hard, they will be lauded as experts on the merits of their work. But that's simply not true anymore. To make a name for yourself, you have to capitalize on your unique perspective and knowledge and inspire others to listen and take action. But becoming a "thought leader" is a mysterious and opaque process. Where do the ideas come from, and how do they get noticed?

Dorie Clark explains how to identify the ideas that set you apart and promote them successfully. The key is to recognize your own value, cultivate your expertise, and put yourself out there.

Featuring vivid examples and drawing on interviews with Seth Godin, Robert Cialdini, and other thought leaders, Clark teaches readers how to develop a big idea, leverage existing affiliations, and build a community of followers. She offers not mere self-promotion, but an opportunity to change the world for the better while giving you the ultimate job insurance.

Lots of advice for extroverts.

If you want to get noticed, you'll need to put in 12-14 hours a day networking, blogging, attending groups, speaking, writing, and researching. If you have a family or a long commute to work, forget it.

There's my summary of this book. It was both inspiring and discouraging at the same time. It's mostly geared towards entrepreneurs or people I who are self-employed, with no family life. For someone like me, I would benefit from more down to earth advice.

Pretty useless

I would listen to E Myth by Michael Gerber or Disrupt You by Jay Samit if you want to get the things you hoped this book would have given you.

Great book

This book is awesome. Dorie is an awesome writer and she reads this book very well. I really enjoyed how she broke down key points that really makes you analyze yourself and your current situation. If you can answer all of the questions that Dorie asks, then you are on a sure path to standing out. Im definitely buying the book for my library.

Take a shower!

So glad that I saw Dorie speak at our cadre of event in Washington DC. Because of that, I was able to purchase this book which undoubtedly will add so much to my life. This book is extremely well-written, concise, and full of thought-provoking questions that guides you down a path to not only create your big idea, but ensure you can build a following around it. And yes, great ideas do occur in the most amazing places, like the shower :-)

Good read for people looking to create ideas.

It’s a good book for people who need help creating an idea. The questions between sections were nice and the book is easy to follow if you only have the audio. I just didn’t like that there were so many ideas from different experts. It’s good to see different POV’s but it can also confuse readers who don’t know what they want to offer to their audience.
