Editorial reviews

" Rework takes aim at marketing, hiring, and other disciplines associated with building a business as if they were bottles lined up against a wall. Then it blows them away...Fried and Hansson are the Henry David Thoreaus of entrepreneurship." (Leigh Buchanan, Inc. Magazine)
" Rework is a Webby manifesto for post-recession success. Forget about strategic planning, [the authors] advise. And ignore your competition - unless you feel like picking a public fight." (Nick Summers, Newsweek)
"I want to buy a copy for everyone I know either to validate their current business practices or to expose them to alternative ways of doing things." (Alexis Rodich, Washington Post)

Publisher's summary

From the founders of the trailblazing software company 37signals, here is a different kind of business book one that explores a new reality. Today, anyone can be in business. Tools that used to be out of reach are now easily accessible. Technology that cost thousands is now just a few bucks or even free. Stuff that was impossible just a few years ago is now simple. That means anyone can start a business. And you can do it without working miserable 80-hour weeks or depleting your life savings. You can start it on the side while your day job provides all the cash flow you need. Forget about business plans, meetings, office space - you don't need them.

With its straightforward language and easy-is-better approach, Rework is the perfect playbook for anyone who's ever dreamed of doing it on their own. Hardcore entrepreneurs, small-business owners, people stuck in day jobs who want to get out, and artists who don't want to starve anymore will all find valuable inspiration and guidance in these pages. It's time to rework work.

Real

Having heard the author in live interviews, I thought the performer did a great job in mimicking their personality. Excellent book. If you want to get to the point, be reminded of how simple it used to be when we started in to hear great tips on how to rework it to get back to simple.

Thought provoking, ever after Getting Real

Even though I read Getting Real, a previous book by David and Jason, some 4 times, Rework is definitely thought provoking and inspiring. I do not agree on all topics, and some of them apply only to software industry, but the time definitely has come to "rework work". Or at least re-think what is possible with modern technology, and why people would even care about some mainstream ideas and ways of doing business originating in 18th century.

What is especially valuable is that this book is written from personal experience and perspective. If you ever thought of starting a company, Rework will be useful for you.

37 Signals

I'm a huge fan of 37 Signals. Rework is ok, but I prefer to listen to their pod casts. The book delves a bit more in depth than the free audio clips available, but I prefer the casual tone of the podcasts.

On point and easy to follow

Actionable, inspiring, opinionated, and concise. I found this book and "remote" to be opening my mind for how I want to work. The book also has some great business advice and a plan for long lived success not just selling out living on the beach.

Quick Hits

Conclusion = A 3.5 out of 5 for me but worth the investment.

The most helpful business books inspire me to think about how to mature our business. I naturally buck at the authortiative tone of this reading/writing. My ego always hears " X" point made and naturally questions whether one or two experiences led to an over extrapolated position. Then I settle on "so what, get over yourself and hear their message." The strength of this book is that it reads as quick hit points and positions on important topics rather than an orchestrated (possibly wasteful) story. I value the short and sweet approach to the writing because in a few commutes I may be inspired to think about numerous facets of our business. This is a book I can play over a couple times a year. I often read Jason Fried's LinkedIn posts and find that I favor his writing style and delivery in the content there much more, plus this book is 7 years old and any writer will grow with time. Lastly, it is 7 years old but entirely relevant.

Amazing book.

I think everyone should read this regardless of what stage their business is in, whether it's big or small and regardless of the type of business or service you want to offer. It made me realise there are so many things that really don't matter and that I wasn't wrong about many things that people say I should not do. People are stuck in the old ways, things have changed and this is how it works today. Also there's no formula and this book puts some perspective in how to find what works for you
