Editorial reviews

" Rework takes aim at marketing, hiring, and other disciplines associated with building a business as if they were bottles lined up against a wall. Then it blows them away...Fried and Hansson are the Henry David Thoreaus of entrepreneurship." (Leigh Buchanan, Inc. Magazine)
" Rework is a Webby manifesto for post-recession success. Forget about strategic planning, [the authors] advise. And ignore your competition - unless you feel like picking a public fight." (Nick Summers, Newsweek)
"I want to buy a copy for everyone I know either to validate their current business practices or to expose them to alternative ways of doing things." (Alexis Rodich, Washington Post)

Publisher's summary

From the founders of the trailblazing software company 37signals, here is a different kind of business book one that explores a new reality. Today, anyone can be in business. Tools that used to be out of reach are now easily accessible. Technology that cost thousands is now just a few bucks or even free. Stuff that was impossible just a few years ago is now simple. That means anyone can start a business. And you can do it without working miserable 80-hour weeks or depleting your life savings. You can start it on the side while your day job provides all the cash flow you need. Forget about business plans, meetings, office space - you don't need them.

With its straightforward language and easy-is-better approach, Rework is the perfect playbook for anyone who's ever dreamed of doing it on their own. Hardcore entrepreneurs, small-business owners, people stuck in day jobs who want to get out, and artists who don't want to starve anymore will all find valuable inspiration and guidance in these pages. It's time to rework work.

Great for old fashioned entrepreneurs, not for me.

What did you like best about Rework? What did you like least?

I guess the authors of this book would be pleased if I call them arrogant. They talk about themselves with an certain superiority that made me want stop listening. But I did finish Rework and I wasn't too impressed. Most of this book wasn't new to me or would be to any modern entrepreneur. However, if you're a bit more conservative this could really be an eye opener. The authors do know what they are talking about and I didn't feel it was a waste of my time. It gave me a few good ideas and made me freshen up my memory.

Would you ever listen to anything by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson again?

I'm a bit hesitant but never say never.

What did you take away from Rework that you can apply to your work?

- Don't wait for things to be perfect, when you have created something get it out there and improve things along the way.
- Create enough time to work uninterrupted during each working day, it makes you more
productive.

Any additional comments?

This book isn't bad, it's just not for me.

Profound. Succinct. Great.

Where does Rework rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of the best. It has lots of timeless business lessons. Very clear and direct.

It explains things that feel so obvious that they shouldn't need to be said; but that most likely do indeed need to be said.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Rework?

Certain conclusions and suggestions:
- Getting to great starts by cutting out stuff that's good.
- You can't build progress on-top of a pending decision. Make lots of small decisions, nothing is final and can be changed later, just progress forward. If you're only making small decisions you can't make a huge mistake.
- Rules for productive meetings

Great read without the fluff

If you're looking for a thesis on business operations, don't look here. The authors book is an example of their business philosophy...forgo the fluff and formalities and get down to substance. The book is narrated list of dos and don'ts for running your business. Some ideas are more challenging than others, but all will cause you to think and rework how you do business. I loved the book and would recommend it highly.

Inspiring and Depressing at the Same Time

An intriguing look at the changes afoot in the knowledge economy, and what it might mean for startup and big-business culture going to forward. At the same time, it's depressing that we aren't there, yet, and may not be in my productive lifetime, if I don't change career paths.
