Mr. Gleeson covers some tried and true approaches, and isn't afraid to mention the other authors whose work is consistent with his perspective. I like this, and I like his references to those similarities. What I like most, however, is the fact that he as updated his recommendations with approaches that describe how today's technologies -- e.g., PDA's, PIMs, web based tools -- can be used to help you be more effective. He has a chapter focused on how not to be overwhelmed by email! And another on using electronic task lists and journals. I have read many many books on prioritizing and organizing work so that I can be more effective, but this is the first one that has really talked about how to use the technology to help, and it doesn't require that you buy a tool developed by them.
The book is well organized and comprehensive. Mr. Gleeson provides easy to follow lists of instructions for how to implement the suggestions. There is also a very short executive summary of the book, and an overview of each chapter to describe what will discussed.
One point that I found slightly irritating -- the author starts out pumping his service, and descriptions of he work they have done with companies are peppered unnecessarily throughout the book.
Overall -- good book, good tips, love the technology focus!
They make good points in this book, however I found it mostly a sales pitch for their organizing program and I'm not keen on paying to buy a commercial.
"Making a real difference"
I found the material very useful even if a few of the tips discussed are obvious. Kerry Gleeson sounds great on this audio and is rather humorous. The content is well presented with current production and relative material. The techniques are backed up with tools that can be used in day to day life so you are not left wandering how to try to adopt some of the methods discussed. Recommend to all.
"Get This Book"
If you are even a bit disorganised, this will help. If you are totally disorganised (I was) it could change your life.
The book shows that it has had many updates and covers pretty much all of the problems of getting organised (how am I going to find the time to do all this stuff! Answer - do a bit at a time and use some of the time you win back to do a bit more). I haven't done everything in the book, in fact, there is a hell of a lot that I haven't done and probably never will, but I am now probably the best organised person in the company and I keep my desk clear - for the first time ever!
The delivery is a bit dry, but don't be put off by it.
Get the book, follow some of the advice - probably the quickest win is by sorting out your email - and improve your working life. This WILL cut down your stress and help you do your job better. (By the way, I am not on commission for this book!)
I didn't get anything particularly new from this, and much of the advice just didn't seem relevant for me. Is it me or is just a little out of date?
