Throughout history, people had little need to manage their careers - they were born into their stations in life or, in the recent past, they relied on their companies to chart their career paths. But times have drastically changed. Today we must all learn to manage ourselves.
What does that mean? As Peter Drucker tells us in this seminal article, first published in 1999, it means we have to learn to develop ourselves. We have to place ourselves where we can make the greatest contribution to our organizations and communities. And we have to stay mentally alert and engaged during a 50-year working life, which means knowing how and when to change the work we do.
It may seem obvious that people achieve results by doing what they are good at and by working in ways that fit their abilities. But, Drucker says, very few people actually know - let alone take advantage of - their fundamental strengths.
He challenges each of us to ask ourselves, "What are my strengths? How do I perform? What are my values? Where do I belong? What should my contribution be?"
Don't try to change yourself, Drucker cautions. Instead, concentrate on improving the skills you have and accepting assignments that are tailored to your individual way of working. If you do that, you can transform yourself from an ordinary worker into an outstanding performer.
Today's successful careers are not planned out in advance. They develop when people are prepared for opportunities because they have asked themselves those questions and have rigorously assessed their unique characteristics.

I've heard of Peter Drucker, this was my first actual encounter. Wow, short, sweet, insightful in just 45 minutes. Just the phrase are you a reader or a listener was immensely helpful. (Especially for us audible listeners) And the price was right.!! I've gifted it 3 times
This is a great book for anyone who is interested in his or her own life! Yes, basically for everyone. This should be read by everyone from age 13, and every year till death. It is beautifully simple, and reminds me of the importance of paying attention to what is happening around me, how to plan ahead and how to keep track of the progress of my life. Very well read, too!
Good insights from Peter Drucker, some of the points were clichéd or not expanded. While some readers might appreciate the brevity, I felt that including more anecdotes and examples would have made a good impact.
Yes, since I agree with his philosophy to an extent.
A very short summary ~45 minutes on Audible. I listened it twice to get better understanding and relate/apply those actions on myself. There are many animated summaries of this book on YouTube - check that out first before spending money. 'Mastery' by Robert Greene is on similar lines which I would recommend to everyone who enjoyed this summary.
If you are looking for an inspirational, entry level prompt to self management, this is it. if you are looking for advanced strategies, Peter Drucker is still an excellent source, but you will need to go to one of his actual books.
Some good nuggets, like understanding how you work and applying that to what you do. Mostly the opposite of a growth mindset. A bit hard to follow, I repeatedly found myself asking what's the point of what is being said right now. Narrator's style is irritating and distracting.
Short but sweet, recommended for anyone on their journey. Will help tighten up your game so to speak.
This one really drove home the different types of personalities that exist and how they perform differently under the stresses of today's work environment. I may have to buy the book on this one.
"must read to everyone!"
Quite short and to the point, exactly how a book like this shouldn've been written.
I believe this audiobook is incomplete. It last just 45min and it stop suddenly. Buy the paperback version
This book is really insightful, the production is not the best but a very good book highly recommended.
"If you don't own it then buy it"
You would be foolish not to buy this invaluable book! Brilliant actionable insights for such a short and low cost book!
"One for the collection"
This book met my expectations in more ways than one. I own the hard copy which I read on a regular basis. Highly recommended.
"An Essential Read"
Short and effective, this book contains knowledge that can be implemented and should be implemented by people in modern society.
