Editorial reviews

If you've heard the phrase "learn from your mistakes" your whole life, but still aren't sure you are getting the lessons, this audiobook is for you. Robert Singer uses his own mistakes and life experiences to illustrate the lessons he thinks we'd all do well to learn. Stephen Bel Davies narrates this audiobook in a raspingly round voice, with a luxurious range of tones. He has a wonderful reading voice and really animates the vividly detailed prose. This audio is generous with its advice, and readers can pick and choose what is useful to them, whether they are looking to gain self-esteem in the personal, romantic, familial, or professional arenas.

Some good stuff, some not

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I wouldn't recommend this to a friend. It seems like it's written as advice to the author's teenage child. from a very cynical father. It's basically organized as "here's how you're going to get screwed; here's how I dealt with it."

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Maybe given some useful advice, versus "stay away from this, stay away from that"

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Wow, the narration was AWFUL!!! I mean, bless the little actor's heart, he put his heart and soul into acting out the book in the most dramatic fashion. Trouble is, it's a non-fiction book. His interpretation was way off. His voice sounded like Bea Aurthur from the Golden Girls or something. So, imagine, Bea Aurthur dramatically acting out a reading of the newspaper. You'll get the idea.

Don’t Waste your time

Don’t waste your time. This Gus has a huge ego and espouses radical views. He is a climate change denier. He opposes all discrimination laws. A thoroughly despicable person.

Interesting perspective

An interesting listen, though I do not agree with all of the author's assertions here. Some of the points he tries to make are overly selfish, but I would argue, to the point of self detriment and not self improvement. I often got the feeling that he was stating that personal happiness in the here and now is the ultimate goal, future repercussions be damned.

While I will take some things to heart, I will definitely not follow some of the other points.

Make of that what you will
