Leadership & Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box | [The Arbinger Institute]

Leadership & Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box

Most personal and organizational problems are the result of a little-known phenomenon called "self-deception". We deceive ourselves into thinking we're doing the right thing for the right reason, but people won't follow a leader whose motives are selfish. The tricky thing is, we don't know that our motivation is flawed. This audiobook explains what self-deception is, how people get trapped in it, how it undermines relationships and organizational achievement, and - most importantly - the surprising way to solve it.

    "Good content, great presentation"
Where does Leadership & Self-Deception rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This has been my favorite. Now, that is only out of four books, but I liked it a lot.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    I didn't have a favorite Character.

What does Peter Berkrot bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He gives a particular voice and personality to the characters that I wouldn't have given them while reading the book.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There were parts that tugged at my heart strings.

    Any additional comments?

I would recommend this book for people who have negative attitudes about coworkers. I might even require it if I had that kind of power.

    "Shut up and listen already"
If you could sum up Leadership & Self-Deception in three words, what would they be?

    Quit killing relationships

What did you like best about this story?

Helped me see how lucky I am up to this point in my life to have any relationships at all!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes.

    Any additional comments?

There are no new skills taught here, just an eye opening experience of seeing people for their Human qualities and not their performance of associated rolls in life. Very, very good for not just leaders of organizations but anyone who interacts with others...ever!

"Everyone should read/listen to this book!"
What made the experience of listening to Leadership & Self-Deception the most enjoyable?

This book is all about how we miss treating others in the ways we should. If we treated others right and they were able to reciprocate our world would be a very different place.

What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?

I will work to make sure that I am aware of being in the box and try hard to get back out.

"Like staring into a microscopic mirror."

I heard a speaker say "if you are pointing your finger at someone else, you need to realize that three fingers are pointed back at yourself." That might be the best way to describe this book. It constantly turns it back on the reader to seriously examine their own problems and areas of self deception.

This book was recommended to me from a speaker and author whose focus is leadership.

I think it is a great listen for all developing leaders (which is hopefully every leader).

    "Sounds simple but it's revealing"
Would you listen to Leadership & Self-Deception again? Why?

Points about self retreat and self deception are very powerful

Who was your favorite character and why?

    All of them are good

Which character – as performed by Peter Berkrot – was your favorite?

    Brian

What insight do you think you’ll apply from Leadership & Self-Deception?

what does it means to be in the box and how to get out

    Any additional comments?

I like to think that the book is about which perspective are you taking: Ego or Soul.
If it's from closed, self defensive, justifying, blaming, me against all, dog eat dog, then you are in the box or you are all your Ego.

    "One Powerful Idea: Clarified"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Began this thinking it was a simple-minded exercise in the obvious. If you can prevail upon yourself to acknowledge that most relationship problems stem fundamentally from our natural disinclination to recognize the truth about ourselves, you will find the material accessible and illuminating. May save my marriage.

    "old truths, new presentation"

A new way of presenting an old truth - the family, the business, the world - are more livable, productive and fun IF people focus on the "other" rather than on themselves. This easily understood, but difficult to achieve, truism is restated every generation and rightly so, we need reminding on a regular basis.

    "Disappointing: A Lack of Authenticity"
Would you try another book from The Arbinger Institute and/or Peter Berkrot?

I wasn't impressed. The story format was intriguing and I was looking forward to some valuable insights delivered with authenticity, What I heard was forced inanity. I found little that was sincere or realistic and I felt ripped off, so I quit listening after the 2nd or 3rd chapter/story.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I'd like to read Ursula K. Le Guin's The Dispossessed, but it doesn't seem to be available on audio.

What didn’t you like about Peter Berkrot’s performance?

Sounded like a Used Car Salesman at times. Felt it was 'acted' rather than delivered with feeling.
