Ideals that everyone should adopt
This is stuff that every person should be taught early. It all seems so obvious if I just list the points out like giving praise, don't put people down, look at everything from the others' point of view etc, but it is all just pretty thoughts without any kind of strategy to implement it. That is what the book helps to clarify. This is not a secret sauce or tips and tricks book as the author says, this is a different way of looking at human relationships that keeps your interest and theirs in mind without the possibility of stirring conflict. Its about making your mindset less about you, and more about others while still accomplishing your goals.
The book essentially goes through several different 'mind sets' that he wants you to adopt and examples to help apply them to life. There are lots of talks on how phrasing, humility, temperament, and understanding empathy with many different scenarios and goals can be applied to help you get ahead while making friends along the way. I found that while the narrator was quite boring and the book may repeat itself often, the good pacing of the chapters kept me interested enough to finish it. When it seemed to get boring, a new chapter and topic would pop up soon to make it interesting for me again. By the end, I felt enthusiastic to begin applying what I have learned and I have already felt the positive effects of praise on my coworkers and friends as well as realizing all the ways I may have been commonly making several simple social blunders. Quite a surprise to me as I picked this up on a whim!
