Publisher's Summary

In today's world of exponentially increased communication and responsibility, yesterday's methods for staying on top just don't work. Veteran management consultant and trainer David Allen recognizes that "time management" is useless the minute your schedule is interrupted; "setting priorities" isn't relevant when your e-mail is down; "procrastination solutions" won't help if your goals aren't clear.

Allen's premise is simple: our ability to be productive is directly proportional to our ability to relax. Only when our minds are clear and our thoughts are organized can we achieve stress-free productivity and unleash our creative potential. He teaches us how to:

  • Apply the "do it, delegate it, defer it, drop it" rule to get your in-box empty.
  • Reassess goals and stay focused in changing situations.
  • Overcome feelings of confusion, anxiety, and being overwhelmed.
  • Feel fine about what you're not doing.

From core principles to proven tricks, Getting Things Done has the potential to transform the way you work - and the way you experience work. At any level of implementation, David Allen's entertaining and thought-provoking advice shows you how to pick up the pace without wearing yourself down.

What would have made Getting Things Done better?

The book has limited content and the writer seemed to fill content with needless babble. The entire message could be communicated in a 30min book.

What was most disappointing about David Allen’s story?

No new revelations and ultimately just rehearing things I already know that havent worked for me.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

made me stress about all the things I don't get done by constantly reminding me that I'm not getting things done.

      Story
"Actionable Instructions on how to Get It Done!"
Would you consider the audio edition of Getting Things Done to be better than the print version?

Yes, I uploaded the accompanying PDF to Evernote so I had pictures, diagrams and illustrations at hand when I needed to. To some extent I do miss dog-ear pages for some of the stuff, but since it is possible to add digital bookmarks that would help. I just haven't got used to using them yet.

What did you like best about this story?

Everything is very focused on how to do things and in what order. This minimizes the risk of being overwhelmed by a systems and behaviour change like this.

What does David Allen bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Allen is great at bringing out humour and seriousness where it was supposed to be, which sometimes is harder when reading a book.

      "Helpful and Informative"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I have listened to this several times and continue to listen to it because I'm very disorganized and it is HARD work for me to change. His ideas- of simplification seem very odd at first, but as I've implemented one thing at a time, my life is getting less chaotic. Don't expect yourself to read/ listen to this one time and have it down. Its a method of organizing every area of your life. Any adult that's driven and engaged will experience trying to sort out several first priorities will be able to call this book an asset. Its a way of living with less chaos and more order without adding to the chaos to get there.

What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?

The IN box... every item gets it's own piece of paper. That was good!

I bought this book due in large part to the positive reviews. That was a mistake. The author's advice to getting organized: use a calendar to track appointments and a file cabinet to store documents. Really? If you are looking to get organized, I suggest you look elsewhere.

David lays out simply the rules, tools, tips and systems for getting things, how to stay on top of things, how to maximise the effectiveness of your time and your productivity. Good examples. Clear, engaging storytelling.

Where does Getting Things Done rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is one of the best audiobooks I've listened to. Since it is read by the author, I felt like I was getting a personal coach for a fraction of the cost of a live coach. I do agree with another reviewer who stated that he also needed to buy the paperback version as a reference. I listened to the audiobook in my car and then read the book at home. (Since I had already listened to the text, I found I could quickly get through the reading and reviewing part at home.) Great book.

      At the top.

      His experiences

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
