Publisher's summary

The New York Times best seller that gives listeners a paradigm-shattering new way to think about motivation from the author of When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing.

Most people believe that the best way to motivate is with rewards like money - the carrot-and-stick approach. That's a mistake, says Daniel H. Pink (author of To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Motivating Others). In this provocative and persuasive new book, he asserts that the secret to high performance and satisfaction - at work, at school, and at home - is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world. Drawing on four decades of scientific research on human motivation, Pink exposes the mismatch between what science knows and what business does - and how that affects every aspect of life. He examines the three elements of true motivation - autonomy, mastery, and purpose - and offers smart and surprising techniques for putting these into action in a unique book that will change how we think and transform how we live.

Thought provoking

This book challenge my perspective as Pink laid out the issues to the 2.0 motivational model we live in today. I like the ideas he presented around intrinsic motivation as a new model. There were some great ideas but it will be a long while before this takes hold in today’s rewards based mentality.

Great book!

A pretty interesting book on the true engines of motivation. Unlike what most people think, motivation doesn't come from external (extrinsic) sources, but from within (that is, intrinsic source). The key is to foster intrinsic motivation through three levers:

1. Autonomy
2. Mastery
3. Purpose

The book is mostly geared towards companies and managers, despite the author talks about using the three levers in the personal life of individuals.

Because I actually read Deacy and Ryan's paper on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, most of what was explained in this book wasn't new to me. What's more, the author summarizes many of the latest information on motivation science, mostly from the positive psychology school of thought (Csikszentmihalyi, Dweck, etc); authors which I've read or whose theories I was aware of.

Albeit its few drawbacks, Drive is a great short read for anyone who likes psychology and motivation.

Useful information, but repetitive

This is a quick listen and includes a lot of great information, but if you haven't seen his 10 minute video about this topic, then you should; you'll get the highpoints without the repetition.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. His narration style is easy to listen to and energetic. It would be nice if a resource list (downloadable PDF) was available for the books and websites he mentions throughout, but especially at the end, of the book.

He's got it!!

Dan has got it nailed, the future of work culture that is! A must read for anyone wondering why many organizations are so dis-com-bob-u-lated. Very refreshing and enlightening, a real dose of hope and possibility to keep you "driving".
