Publisher's summary

The New York Times best seller that gives listeners a paradigm-shattering new way to think about motivation from the author of When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing.

Most people believe that the best way to motivate is with rewards like money - the carrot-and-stick approach. That's a mistake, says Daniel H. Pink (author of To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Motivating Others). In this provocative and persuasive new book, he asserts that the secret to high performance and satisfaction - at work, at school, and at home - is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world. Drawing on four decades of scientific research on human motivation, Pink exposes the mismatch between what science knows and what business does - and how that affects every aspect of life. He examines the three elements of true motivation - autonomy, mastery, and purpose - and offers smart and surprising techniques for putting these into action in a unique book that will change how we think and transform how we live.

Not bad

I enjoyed it mostly. Some seems easier said than done. Too utopian at times. Not too bad.

Why is being exceptional so damn complicated?

This book will be a useful conversation starter in any company. The book tackles motivation and explains that as our world has become more complicated, so has our work. And complicated work allows for humanity's innate intrinsic motivators to kick in. And those intrinsic motivators have different chemistry with classic carrot and stick management techniques. The ideas in this book are counter-intuitive and as us usually the case, raise more questions than answers. Managing people is a tricky business and is getting trickier every day.

It was alright

I like the idea but it’s kind of a monotonous listen. The author summarizes studies without adding in any jazz.
The narrator didn’t seem interested either, he was just reading

Good, but repetitive

Definitely had some interesting concepts which seemed solid amd worth putting into practice. The author did a pretty good job narrating, so no complaints there. The book started strong, but sort of fizzled out in my opinion -- it got a bit repetitive, which made it tough to hold my interest and attention.
