Publisher's summary

The New York Times best seller that gives listeners a paradigm-shattering new way to think about motivation from the author of When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing.

Most people believe that the best way to motivate is with rewards like money - the carrot-and-stick approach. That's a mistake, says Daniel H. Pink (author of To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Motivating Others). In this provocative and persuasive new book, he asserts that the secret to high performance and satisfaction - at work, at school, and at home - is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world. Drawing on four decades of scientific research on human motivation, Pink exposes the mismatch between what science knows and what business does - and how that affects every aspect of life. He examines the three elements of true motivation - autonomy, mastery, and purpose - and offers smart and surprising techniques for putting these into action in a unique book that will change how we think and transform how we live.

Intro to leadership

For a non-military book, this is a good look on a topic glossed over by a lot of leadership book. How do you get someone to perform better, work hard, feel included or know they are part of a team. These are often internal thoughts that most leaders do not ask. When you want to know what it is going to take to turn a department around start by giving this book a read.

Fascinating

Talks about the scientific research that explains what motivates us and why. It also talks about why certain motivational tactics might work, used to work, and may no longer work, depending upon the job needing to be done and the individuals psychological make-up. Very interesting and offers great insights into what to do or not do to motivate people. I found it quite fascinating.

Some good points. Overly repetitive

The book is fairly short, and yet overly repetitive. After listening through it, I am left with this feeling that it was pretty light on real substance.

Excellent Content!

Really changes your perspective on what motivates us. As an educator, it has inspired me with several new ideas! This book really shines a light on the gap between what science knows and what we do.
