Publisher's summary

Thousands of American soldiers are returning from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan with severe wounds from chemical war. They are not the victims of ruthless enemy warfare, but of their own military commanders. These soldiers, afflicted with rare cancers and respiratory diseases, were sickened from the smoke and ash swirling out of the "burn pits" where military contractors incinerated mountains of trash, including old stockpiles of mustard and sarin gas, medical waste, and other toxic material.

Based on thousands of government documents, over 500 in-depth medical case studies, and interviews with more than 1,000 veterans and active-duty GIs, The Burn Pits will shock the nation. The book is more than an explosive work of investigative journalism - it is the deeply moving chronicle of the many young men and women who signed up to serve their country in the wake of 9/11, only to return home permanently damaged, the victims of their own armed forces' criminal negligence.

Niche but good

I read this directly after Scott Horton's 'Enough Already' it was way more interesting with some context. Enough Already told the metaplot of our nation's foreign policy in the Middle East, while Burn Pitts filled a gap in that overarching story by detailing a single, though vital, issue.

You need to listen to this and spread the info for our veterans!

Medevac’d from Camp Bucca in 2008 after having problems breathing and chest pain. Was in the best shape of my life during this time as I was slotted to try Special Forces selection upon my return. Have continually been told it’s all in my head or it’s anxiety and been denied the proper treatment. We need to get this info out there so our veterans get the care they need. Just knowing there’s proof and others are going through it has made me feel better.

Great overview and information

Excellent overview on a sad situation. Some of the information can be found online. However, the author did a great job at providing more details without bogging down into the weeds.

Terrifying story, all too true.

Americans need to know what is being done to our Armed Service members in their name, but without their knowledge or permission... and all in the name of military contractor profits.
The book is read rathet robotically though, as if designed to be absorbed by veterans rather than the typical reader.

Good book but keep your bipolar political beliefs to yourself

The writer gave great information into little know issues that many soldiers came back dealing with and how the VA does not have your back in any situation. I felt like the writer was bipolar because one minute he would like w political side and one minute he would do one side. He would have been best keeping his political views out of the book. Reps and Dems could care less about any working man or woman defending our country. He made it seem like only dems help veterans which is far from the truth.
