This is the first volume in a bold new series that tells the stories of all peoples, connecting historical events from Europe to the Middle East to the far coast of China, while still giving weight to the characteristics of each country. Susan Wise Bauer provides both sweeping scope and vivid attention to the individual lives that give flesh to abstract assertions about human history. This narrative history employs the methods of "history from beneath" - literature, epic traditions, private letters, and accounts - to connect kings and leaders with the lives of those they ruled.

Mara is not like other slaves; she can read and write, as well as speak the language of Babylonian. So, to barter for her freedom, she finds herself playing the dangerous role of double spy for two arch enemies—each of whom supports a contender for the throne of Egypt. Against her will, Mara finds herself falling in love with one of her masters, the noble Sheftu, and she starts to believe in his plans of restoring Thutmose III to the throne.

Good historical fiction
The narration could be smoother, as Ms. Muse emphasizes too many words, and sometimes the wrong ones. Children are not likely to be bothered by that and the story is entertaining and informative.

Great book
My kids and I loved the story! Great writing, and loveable characters. The reader, we didn’t feel, is suited for this type of book. Her take with many of the characters was more angry and dramatic than we felt they needed to be, given the dialogue. I wonder if it was her first time reading the book. We’ll read it again soon as a read aloud rather than this particular audiobook.

very engaging
We planned to listen to one chapter a day. The narration was very good, and the story was enjoyable we found our son asking for more. It was a very good story and it was suggested as a read aloud in his G & B curriculum. When were studying ancient Egypt he said, that's like in our story!

We all loved it.
We listened to this because my boys (8 & 9) became interested in ancient Egypt and the pyramids. I loved it as much as they did. I highly recommend.

Educational and entertaining.
My 8 year old granddaughter and I really enjoyed listening to this book. We were both disappointed when it ended. The person reading the book did a great job. Not only did we learn many things about ancient Egypt, the book held or interest and caused us to feel we were there in the midst of the story.

My daughters 6 and 9, loved the story...
Both my daughters, 6 and 9, loved the story. It's very captivating. Only my oldest daughter was disappointed at the end when she realized the story was over and there wasn't anything about the consequences the villain (Anoteh) should have suffered.
