Publisher's summary

"Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand." (Rev: 1-3)

The books of the Bible were written at different times by different authors over a period of approximately 1,500 years from around 1400 BC through AD 90. The Old Testament was written in Biblical Hebrew, excluding the books written during "the Chaldean captivity" such as Daniel and Ezra which were written in Biblical Aramaic during the Chaldean captivity.

Many of the books of the Old Testament bear the names of the prophets who authored them. Moses compiled the earlier parts of Genesis and directly authored the remaining portion. David wrote much of Psalms, while Solomon wrote the books of The Song of Solomon and Ecclesiastes. The Books of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel bear the names of the prophets who wrote them. The Old Testament books of the minor prophets bear the author's name as well. The four New Testament Gospels were pinned by Matthew, Mark, Luke, John. The Apostle Paul pinned authorship to 13 of the 27 books of the New Testament. The authorship of the remaining 10 books of the New Testament belong to the disciples of Jesus Christ.

The Hebrew Bible was then translated into Greek and finally into English. John Wycliffe first translated the entire Bible (both Old and New Testaments) into English in 13th-century England. William Tyndale translated the Bible into English in 15th-century England. The King James translators used the Tyndale and Wycliffe translations in the publishing of the King James Bible in 1611, commonly referred to as "The Holy Bible".

Alexander Scourby was the first to record the King James Bible on audio in the early 1950s. Since then, millions have been sold the world over. Although many have recorded the Bible over the years, no one could ever match Scourby's unparalleled and majestic reading. The combination of Alexander Scourby reading the King James Bible is an incomparable hearing experience.

This translation is older English, but I loved it.

When I was about 9 years old, I had nightmares and trouble sleeping.
Then we got tapes of Alexander Scourby reading the Bible! They expanded my vocabulary, grounded me in truth, and helped me sleep more peacefully. Last night I revisited the delight of this comforting narration!

Note to parenting persons:
If you decide to try the same idea for your child, you may want to preview each book of the Bible before you play it for your young person.
The Bible is not shy about the realities of life, so some families may want to check that their child is developmentally ready for the content in a given book of the Bible.
Many people start Bible exploration with the book of John. It is one of the most widely read tellings of Jesus' life on earth. It features focus on his deep, brave love, his power in making a difference for humanity, and his the intense suffering and victory at the end of his time on earth.

Da best ever.

No one can duplicate the power and majesty of his narration. Started listening to him in 1981 on my Sony Walkman cassette player. Have complete Bible on CD now and you can obtain it on Audible as well.

Now able to slow scurby down enough to be used for bible listening

I have his bible OUTSIDE of audible and he was waaay too fast for the Bible to be read. You could not listen to it! Because audible lets us slow down to -5 ,I’m sooo much enjoying his reading now. Thank you for selling the rights to audible so we can enjoy his work of the greatest mystery held before the foundation of the world....Christ in us...the hope of glory

Highly Recommenf

Scourby is hands down one of the best narrators of our time. I have listened to his readings for decades. I am grateful Audible has made books read by him available.
