Publisher's summary

Zero regrets. It's a philosophy not just about sport but about life. School, business, academics, love - anything and everything. It's complicated and yet not. You have to figure out who it is you want to be. Not what you want to be - but who. There has to be a vision, a dream, a plan. Then you chase that with everything you've got.

Over three consecutive Olympic games, Apolo Ohno has come to symbolize the very best of the competitive spirit - remaining equally gracious in victory and defeat, always striving to improve his performance, and appreciating the value of the hard work of training as much as any reward it might bring. In Zero Regrets, Apolo shares the inspiring personal story behind his remarkable success, as well as the hard-won truths and strategies he has discovered in good times and bad.

Raised by his single father, an immigrant from Japan who often worked 12-hour days, the young Apolo found it difficult to balance his enormous natural gifts as an athlete with an admittedly wild, rebellious streak. After making a name for himself as a promising young speed skater, his career was almost over before it began when his lack of preparation caused him to finish last at the U.S. Olympic trials in 1998. A life-changing week of solitary soul-searching at the age of 15 led him to recommit himself to his training, and at the 1999 world junior championships he won first place overall - one of the most remarkable turnarounds in sports history. From that moment on, the world of speed skating had a new champion and Apolo was on his way to legendary status.

Much more than an account of races won and lost, Apolo shares his secrets for achieving total focus and mental toughness, secrets that can be applied in situations well beyond sports.

Great American Athlete and Person

A family member, fellow OTC resident athlete of Apollo’s in the sport of weightlifting, was very friendly with him, and over the years would mention how hard he trained. He really did all the things he describes in this autobiography.

As important, he found Apolo to be a very nice, intelligent, regular guy interpersonally.

While he would at times accompany Apolo to those training sessions at Garden of the Gods and the trail up the mountain to watch him, he never attempted to actually exercise with him, far too challenging a type of endurance training for a super heavyweight weightlifter he said!

Outstanding insight into the life and times of Apolo Ohno, personal narration extremely articulate and very well done.

OUTSTANDING!!

A must read. Apollo does an outstanding job of narrating his own book by just telling his story raw and gritty. His road to the Olympics (and Dancing with the Stars) is an inspirational story that I couldn't stop listening to. Highly recommended.

WOW!

I choose this book because I heard Apolo speak at a Brian Buffini event and he was outstanding! I listened to it as I walked in the mornings and found that I would look for time during the day to continue listening. If it was a book (I had the audio version) it would be a book that would be hard to put down. Definitely recommend it to young adults and adults alike for encouragement and motivation. Especially for adults who may be struggling to exercise. Thank Apolo for sharing your experiences and making your book motivating!

The GOAT

It is a fantastic audiobook. I admire Apolo so much. I remember watching Apolo compete in the Olympics. Because of him, I started paying attention to the short-track races. I hope one of these days run into him at The Incline in Colorado Springs.

Kept my interest

Fascinating book narrated by Ohno himself--he tells the story of what it takes to be the best in the world at short track skating in the Olympics. No worries that he gave his secrets away. I am guessing there are few people who would have the dedication and mindset to go after a momentous goal as singlemindedly as he did. He's an honorable and very talented individual and we haven't heard the last from him. I am sure of that.

Great listen

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

A Great listen and a very inspiring book. I loved that he narrated it also. I would definitely recommend this to a friend or anybody who would want to know how to win and get/give inspiration for success in athletics, business and life in general.

What other book might you compare Zero Regrets to and why?

I would compare it to Seabiscuit. I loved that book. I love the insights to both books and both made me wish I was there to see them.

Have you listened to any of Apolo Ohno’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, it was over 2 two days.

Any additional comments?

I do remember watching Apolo in the 2002 Olymics and it's probably the first time I had watch speed skating. I've always loved figure skating until the Tanya Harding & Nancy Kerrigan scandal, then in my opinion, it went down hill. Apolo brought short track skating to the foreground and became of the face of short track skating in America.

Would recommend and have already told friends and family about his hard work and great attitude towards life!

Which scene was your favorite?

Saying that even if he was just doing a routine workout, what if that was the last thing he ever did in life and had he given it all.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Made me stop worrying about the little stuff and get busy with making good things happen!

Any additional comments?
