Publisher's summary

Wild is a powerful, blazingly honest memoir: the story of an 1100-mile solo hike that broke down a young woman reeling from catastrophe - and built her back up again.

At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

Strayed faced down rattlesnakes and black bears, intense heat and record snowfalls, and both the beauty and loneliness of the trail. Told with great suspense and style, sparkling with warmth and humor, Wild vividly captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed her.

Critic reviews

“No one can write like Cheryl Strayed. Wild is one of the most unflinching and emotionally honest books I've read in a long time. It is about forgiveness and grief, bravery and hope. It is unforgettable.” (Ann Hood, author of The Knitting Circle)
“While reading Cheryl Strayed’s stunning book about her arduous solo journey along the Pacific Crest Trail, I kept asking myself - what would I do if I were stripped bare of everything - money, job, community, even family and love? Thoreau once said, ‘In wildness is the preservation of the world.’ For Strayed, it is clear that in wildness was the preservation of her soul. She reminds us, in her lyrical and courageous memoir Wild, of what it means to be fully alive, even in the face of catastrophe, physical and psychic hardship, and loss." (Mira Bartók, author of The Memory Palace)
“Cheryl Strayed can sure tell a story. In Wild, she describes her journey from despair to transcendence with honesty, humor, and heart-cracking poignancy. This is a great book.” (Mary Pipher, author of Reviving Ophelia and Seeking Peace)

Great Read- Makes Me Want to Hike and Find Myself

Great Read
The story was inspiring without being cliche.
I want to go on my own journey to find myself. Before reading this story I didn't realize that I could use a journey of self discovery; but I could.

Wonderful from beginning to end

I'm not sure I can do this book justice in a short online review. The story is artfully and honestly told with no dry spots or dragging. It's the best depiction of grief that I have ever read while at the same time being hopeful and strong. I enjoyed the humor, the unfortunate moments, the honesty, and the story. It's a book I would read again and again.

A Great Adventure

Highly Recommend - I had never heard of this book when it popped up as a suggestion, but the sample caught my interest, so I took a chance and bought it. I'm so glad I did, because it is one of the best books I've listened to in a while. It is a memoir of the author's solo hike of the Pacific Crest Trail. It's the rare non-fiction adventure story centered around a woman. With the vivid details I felt like I was on the trail with Strayed. This story is not just about hiking though, it is about the author's quest to recover from several tragedies in her life, and again, I felt like I was there, growing with her.

Enjoyable read...

I enjoyed it a lot. Some ladies in my book club were shocked by her choices and behavior. Thought it was an interesting journey. Much braver than I could do. Enjoyable audible voice

Hang in there

The begining of the book set the book up, but I didn't find it as compelling as her walk on the PCT. I enjoyed the people we met along her journey. Cheryl did not hold anything back from the reader, she was honest. What an adventure and an accomplishment to have hiked over 1,100 miles own her own.

Butchered by Grandma's narration...

While enjoyable i really did not like grandma's narration. She just took away from this book. The movie was much better.
