Publisher's summary

Profane, honest, and totally real advice from comedian and director Kevin Smith - one of America's most original voices....

Take one look at Kevin Smith: He's a balding fatty who wears a size XXL hockey jersey, shorts, and slippers year-round. Not a likely source for life advice. But take a second look at Kevin Smith: He changed filmmaking forever when he was 24 with the release of Clerks, and since then has gone on to make nine more profitable movies, runs his own production company, wrote a best-selling graphic novel, and has a beautiful wife and kids. So he must be doing something right.

As Kevin's millions of Twitter followers and millions of podcast listeners know, he's the first one to admit his flaws and the last one to care about them. In early 2011, he began using his platform to answer big questions from fans - like "What should I do with my life?"- and he discovered that he had a lot to say. Tough Sh-t distills his four decades of breaking all the rules down to direct and brutally honest advice, including:

  • Why he has accepted Ferris Bueller as his personal savior, and what the Tenets of Buellerism can teach about hiding in plain sight and lip-syncing in the face of danger
  • Why it's really fun to eat but not so fun to be fat
  • What to do about people who don't like your policies ( for starters, tell them to pucker up and smooch your big ol' butt)
  • What Kevin's idol Wayne Gretzky can teach us about creativity and direction

For anyone who's out of a job, out of luck, or just out of sugary snack foods, Tough Sh*t is an unabashedly honest guide to getting the most out of doing the least.

Great Sh-t: A Funny, Thought Provoking Book

What did you love best about Tough Sh-t?

Kev's honesty and openness. I also enjoyed hearing him read the book. It was like listening to a friend talk about things in his life.

Have you listened to any of Kevin Smith’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have only listened to his live shows and his podcasts. He is a consummate performer and very easy to listen to.

What insight do you think you’ll apply from Tough Sh-t?

Family is first and foremost! Also, go where the puck is going not where it has been.

For the fans

This book, especially the audio book, plays and or reads almost like a SModcast episode. I think it is an easier listen/read if you are a fan but given a chance there is something for just about everyone. Read/listen or don't read/listen the choice is yours, just don't expect some inspirational Tony Robbins hand holding. Kevin is inspirational as f@$k if you let him, he just does it with the flare and mouth of a 10th grader!

A wonderful ride through the life of Kevin Smith

I will admit, I didn’t know much about Kevin Smith or what he has done, but after reading this book, well... I am now a big fan! Your emotions will be like a roller coaster, some moments are sad, some angry, and some so happy it’ll make you cry. No spoilers but that ending got me. Love this book and love Kevin Smith.

Fly, fat man, fly!

Tough Sh*t by Kevin "Silent Bob" Smith is a hilarious tale of tales in the life of one of this generation's most influential filmmakers. Narrated by Smith himself, the 5 plus hour audiobook of Tough Sh*t: Life Advice from a Fat, Lazy Slob Who Did Good is a pleasure to listen to. In less time than it takes to crawl through a heavy case of the Mondays at work, this audiobook was finished in no time. Which is not necessarily a good thing. It was such a funny insight into Kevin Smith's career, as well as his cum-dispensing personal life, that you are left wanting more. Not unlike the goddess that is his wife, Jennifer Schwalbach (by Smith's own account). I hope to see and look forward to any other written works by one of my favorite directors that may arise in the future. From Clerks to Tough Sh*t and beyond, Kevin Smith has a lot to say and as always it is quite a pleasure to hear what that is. I'd highly recommend this publication, both in print and audiobook formats, to anyone looking to chuckle at and be inspired by a (former) fat man and his many misadventures that helped create the man we know as Kevin Smith today. 5 stars across the board!

If you like Kevin Smith you'll like it

If you don't know who he is it's pretty pointless. The stories aren't interesting unless you're already a fan
