Publisher's summary

Profane, honest, and totally real advice from comedian and director Kevin Smith - one of America's most original voices....

Take one look at Kevin Smith: He's a balding fatty who wears a size XXL hockey jersey, shorts, and slippers year-round. Not a likely source for life advice. But take a second look at Kevin Smith: He changed filmmaking forever when he was 24 with the release of Clerks, and since then has gone on to make nine more profitable movies, runs his own production company, wrote a best-selling graphic novel, and has a beautiful wife and kids. So he must be doing something right.

As Kevin's millions of Twitter followers and millions of podcast listeners know, he's the first one to admit his flaws and the last one to care about them. In early 2011, he began using his platform to answer big questions from fans - like "What should I do with my life?"- and he discovered that he had a lot to say. Tough Sh-t distills his four decades of breaking all the rules down to direct and brutally honest advice, including:

  • Why he has accepted Ferris Bueller as his personal savior, and what the Tenets of Buellerism can teach about hiding in plain sight and lip-syncing in the face of danger
  • Why it's really fun to eat but not so fun to be fat
  • What to do about people who don't like your policies ( for starters, tell them to pucker up and smooch your big ol' butt)
  • What Kevin's idol Wayne Gretzky can teach us about creativity and direction

For anyone who's out of a job, out of luck, or just out of sugary snack foods, Tough Sh*t is an unabashedly honest guide to getting the most out of doing the least.

Love this book!!!

Kevin Smith has such a flare for writing that listening to his book sounds more like an interview than a reading. I hope he writes more because his vocabulary is extensive, but he doesn't make it sound egotistical. If you like his films or were lucky enough to to see him on tour, this is a must have audio book!

Memoir with Entertainment

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely would recommend this book to a friend because its laugh out loud funny.

Any additional comments?

This book is narrated by Kevin Smith himself. He gives you a few off the hook comments on his life and a look into how he got to where he is now. We all die screaming, so we better come to terms with the tough sh-t.

The no holds bard approach.

Which scene was your favorite?

The initial introduction.

If you're at Kevin Smith van you will absolutely love this book, if not it depends on your sensibilities.

I really enjoyed this book, it being told by Kevin himself who is an amazing storyteller really adds to the immersion. It is however a crass book so if you're easily offended or even offended by any of his movies it might not be for you. However if you have a thick skin
even if you're not a fan of his movies this book my turn you around on him.

Lots of gems here

What made the experience of listening to Tough Sh-t the most enjoyable?

Kevin Smith reading it

What was one of the most memorable moments of Tough Sh-t?

The beginning noting what we all once were.

Which scene was your favorite?

The chapter about George Carlin.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Talking about his dad's death.

Any additional comments?

If you're a Kevin Smith fan (which I am), this is a must read/listen...actually the listening is almost better because it's Kevin Smith reading it. If you are not a Kevin Smith fan, I still encourage you to check this out because it has some real gems in it...both in making you laugh out loud as well as really giving you some things to think about. If you have no idea who Kevin Smith is, I still recommend it, however be forewarned that there is a lot of dirty language, I mean, look at the title for Pete's sake.

Good advice

Would you consider the audio edition of Tough Sh-t to be better than the print version?

I did not read the print version, but knowing that Kevin is a free spirit, I would imagine that he put something extra into the audio edition.

Which scene was your favorite?

The story of how difficult Bruce Willis was to work with on the set of "Cop-Out" was easily my favorite. He describes, in detail, the painful process of getting work out of someone who did not seem to want to perform.

Listened to it twice already, can't get enough!

What did you love best about Tough Sh-t?

I love how frank and candid he is, he's real, honest and a true human f'n being! I like the way he reads it, the way his sense of humor is similar to my own.

What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?

Go where the "puck" is going to be.

Any additional comments?

His podcasting website is incredible and I suggest Hollywood Babble On and his show with Scott Mosier. Even though those aren't books, the shows are similar to this audio book recording, except sometimes with an audience.
