Since bursting onto the scene in the mid '70s, the pop duo Captain and Tennille have long defined the sparkling, optimistic idea of everlasting love, both in their music and through their image as a happy and, seemingly, unbreakable couple. They were an irresistible pair to millions of fans all over the world, further underscored by the rousing "yes, we can!" gospel of their biggest hit, "Love Will Keep Us Together". But underneath the image was an entirely different story that the fans never saw: a woman who fought a lonely struggle against the controlling and often bizarre behavior of her emotionally inaccessible husband.
Toni Tennille: A Memoir is a visceral account of Toni Tennille's life from her childhood in the segregated South to her thrilling rise to fame in the world of pop music to where she is now: no longer one-half of a famed couple but a stronger woman for all she has experienced - both the good and the bad. Toni hopes that her story will help anyone who feels trapped in a toxic relationship realize that it is never too late to break away from it.

"Thick with a Southern affect, [Tennille's] narration is as candid and raw as it is warmly honest. Her voicing, not surprisingly, is excellent and moving." (AudioFile)
Having been very young when their music was popular, I vaguely remember the Captain and Tennille. I do not believe I will forget Toni Tennille now. Her story was earnest and gracious. Being a southern woman, her need to please and facilitate happiness are achingly familiar. Her story telling manner is straight forward and highly compelling. I found this to be a thoroughly enjoyable listen.
Toni Tennille amassed an array of chart hits, gold and platinum albums and a Grammy Award with her husband Daryl Dragon as the Captain and Tennille. In her memoir, Toni reveals many vivid details of her youth, personal triumphs and tragedies, and a glimpse inside her marriage to her musical partner. As a lifelong fan of the duo and her solo work, it was like listening to a good friend pour her heart out. Absolutely wonderful and beautifully read by Toni.
I chose to listen to this book because I came from a very difficult marriage with someone who I believe never loved me even though I tried and tried. I thought I could get some closer listening to Toni's story. And I did!! But I also enjoyed hearing about her childhood and career! Toni is an amazingly talented and strong woman. I throughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to fans and survivors of strenuous marriages and relationships. I'm so glad she is happy now, just like me!!
I loved the story of the concert with Roger Waters
I'm sorry she stayed so long in that relationship.
I enjoyed her story and her narration very much. I was a barely a young adult when they came out. It's amazing what people go through privately, all the while suffering in ways privately that the public is in complete darkness. My heart went out to her. She, like so many other women in an psychologically abusive relationship think they can help their spouse or partner by their love alone. only to find out in the end that the problem isn't their's to fix; and it's impossible. But, what a beautiful, kind, and astoundingly patient and long-suffering person she is. At any rate their music was great a day I love it along with millions of others. And I'm so happy you found peace at last. Thank you for sharing such a poignant and revealing story of your life. It was beautifully and tastefully told. ☺
I don't regret listening to the book because I enjoy learning how others live.
I wouldn't recommend this particular book because I don't understand how she lived her (pretty much) entire life with this man. I never learned why she tolerated all his oddities and neglectful behavior. Yet, she stayed in the marriage. I just don't get that.
Okay. It's more effective when the writer is also the narrator.
No. Can't think there is more to say.
I grew up with Captain and Tenille. I love memoirs. I looked forward to my commutes around town just so I could listen to more. Thanks Toni for sharing your story! And, thanks for the music!!
I so enjoyed hearing your story! Our lives have some simular parallels! I'm so happy to hear you live in Florida now. I live just an hour from you on the Space Coast! My Grandmother and Mom were born in Alabama. Your book was a blessing to listen to as I drove to and from work and had some down time. Your adorable southern accent feels like family and is easy on the ears! You did a Beautiful job!
