Publisher's summary

The same vulnerable but invincible spirit that captured our hearts in the Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir Angela's Ashes comes of age in 'Tis.

Listen as Frank tells in his own inimitable voice his story of how at the age of 19 he traveled from Limerick to New York in pursuit of the American dream. Despite the abundance of unsolicited advice he gets to "join the cops" and "stick to his own kind", Frank knows that he should educate himself and somehow rise above his circumstances.

And though he left school at 14, he talks his way into New York University, falls in love with the quintessential Yankee, long-legged and blond, and tries to live his dream. But it is not until he starts to teach - and to write - that Frank finds his place in the world. And for those of us who are lucky enough to come across his writings - and captivating readings - 'Tis a wonderful thing that he did.

Enjoyed this story

Not as much as I enjoyed Angela's Ashes. And I'm glad I heard it. I felt as if the author skipped parts of the story at some points. as information was being introduced it seemed, without its "beginning." leaving me feeling a little confused sometimes. It gave me the feeling he might have cut down an original version. But overall, it was worth it. Made me want to read Malachi's book next.

The best book to read and listen to

The story is amazing. Bracing but touching and witty. Frank reads impeccably. Or, I should say, tells. It’s the perfect audiobook. I read Teacher Man, Angela’s Ashes, then Tis. Doesn’t matter the order. Here’s your next three credits.

Belly Laugh Funny

I listened to 'Tis straight through and couldn't wait to get Teacher Man loaded on my Ipod. Frank McCourt has such a way of saying the truth about everything. He says things other people wish they could say. He keeps things simple, real and funny. And that's the way life should be.

A good sequel

I really like Frank McCourt in spite of everything. I have a soft spot in my heart for anyone who has been through the kinds of things he has endured, and then comes out on top. I didn't love everything about this book, but I am very glad I read it. Being a school teacher myself, I really identified with the struggles he had as a new teacher at a high school. I found myself laughing and crying. If you are inclined to read it, be sure to read Angela's Ashes first.

Moving

"Write simply", Frank McCourt would advise. This book is anything but simple. It is moving, thought provoking, intriguing and heart warming. Beautifully written and read by the author.

Ties up lose ends...

This was OK but defiantly not as endearing as Angels Ashes. Having said that it, was enjoyable enough to be recommended, and it does bring the first story full circle, it just lacks the charm of AA. I gave 4 stars because there wasn't an option for 3.5 which I think would be more accurate.

One of the best books I have ever read

Usually disappointed with the high reviews on books however this book is one of the best ones I have ever read Frank McCourt, Angela ashes is a prelude to Tis. Be sure to read that one first. Great story!!

More Interesting Than Angela's Ashes

What made the experience of listening to 'Tis the most enjoyable?

The class room banter is beautiful!

What other book might you compare 'Tis to and why?

It is the continuation of Angela;s Ashes

Which character – as performed by Frank McCourt – was your favorite?

"Ach I", his father is very interesting and the Hotel scene in Dublin with his mother and the Kerry man trying to charm her is priceless!

Unforgettable Conclusion of Angela's Ashes

Loved it!! This story is a continuation of the award-winning book (and movie) Angela's Ashes. I could listen to Frank McCourt read volumes of books about his fascinating life with all the ups and dowms of growing up in a poor, dysfunctional, yet humurous, Irish family. I love stories of people with very humble beginnings who find their way against impossible odds to become successful in life, and this is one such story magnificently written and read by Frank McCourt. This book would make a great movie too 👍.
