Ecellent book excellent narration

I like Elizabeth’s insights regarding the meaning of the events through which she lived. She does not hesitate to tell the truth. This is the story of real human beings who tried to live out the example of Jesus, even to the point of martyrdom, in order to turn some people from lies and evil and fear toward truth and good and freedom. This is a miraculous story of God’s love and sovereignty, a story which points to a reality beyond our own, towards heaven.

Insight into each missionary's past and their hopes and fears are all spelled out. No romanticizing here.

What does Marguerite Gavin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Her tendency to sound like an automaton when she was reading the men's diary excerpts was offputting. I was always thrown off by the "I'll now sound like a matter of fact man's thoughts".

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I appreciate Elliot's second epilogue where she says it's not really cut and dried regarding the whys and wherefores of what happened-- the truth was that some good things came of it and some bad things came of it. God's word and salvation brought, but also diseases introduced, etc.
Amazing that she can live with God's truth and know that she'll need to learn from Him why He led them the way that He did.

The 1st Book By Elisabeth Elliott

The first book I ever read by EE—still a favorite upon reading it after all these years. The account of the 5 men who God called and they answered unreservedly, “yes,” reminds me that the person who “gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose” is “no fool.”
