Publisher's Summary

From the #1 New York Times best-selling author of Running With Scissors comes a groundbreaking book that explores how to survive the "un-survivable" and will challenge your notion of self-help books.

To say that Augusten Burroughs has lived an unusual life is an understatement. From having no formal education past third grade and being raised by his mother’s psychiatrist in the seventies to enjoying one of the most successful advertising careers of the eighties to experiencing a spectacular downfall and rehab stint in the nineties to having a number one bestselling writing career in the new millennium, Burroughs has faced humiliation, transformation and everything in between.

This Is How is his no-holds-barred book of advice on topics as varied as:

  • How to feel like crap
  • How to ride an elevator
  • How to be thin
  • How to be fat
  • How to find love· How to feel sorry for yourself
  • How to get the job
  • How to end your life
  • How to remain unhealed
  • How to finish your drink
  • How to regret as little as possible
  • And much more

Told with Burroughs's unique voice, black humor, and in-your-face advice, This is How is Running With Scissors - with recipes.

    "Not Augusten's Best"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

    Sort of ... I guess ...

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I would have presented my observations as my opinions and not dismiss another's opinions so nonchalantly.

Was This Is How worth the listening time?

    Yes, with reservations ...

    Any additional comments?

Augusten Burroughs is an important observer of humanity. However, he does himself no justice with his autocratic presentations. He needs to get back to fiction wherein he excels.

"I love Augusten Burroughs, but not this book."

I was really looking forward to this, everything Augusten Burroughs writes is awesome- except for Wolf at the Table and this book.

This book is kind of like a lecture, which would be great because of who the author is.. but it's just so "talk, talk, talk". Maybe he could have shortened the chapters and still made his point.

Oh well, maybe next time. I won't give up on him.

"If you enjoy Augusten Burroughs, you'll love this!"
What did you love best about This Is How?

The thing I enjoyed best about this book is the gritty realness of the message. It made me see my life threw the eyes of the author and question my way of thinking. I am listening to it for the second time to make sure it really sunk in.

What was one of the most memorable moments of This Is How?

Each chapter tackles issues that we all deal with at some point or another in our lives.

    Which scene was your favorite?

    The chapter about dieting

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The author describing preparing for his partner to die, and how he tried to do everything to be ready.

What would have made This Is How better?

The writing is too pretentious to be able to be fixed. And the author puts out streams of made-up nonsense that he thinks is based on facts, but is actually just made up out of whole cloth.

His chapter on stopping drinking and fixing anorexia is a good example.

What could Augusten Burroughs have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Honestly, he could have written something more like his earlier books. And not this stuff.

How could the performance have been better?

He has such a grating voice and only wearing a muffler might have helped.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I was annoyed by what he was saying and how he was saying it.

"This is a little weird, but i love his work"
What made the experience of listening to This Is How the most enjoyable?

This is different than his other works. it's seemed more personal and by that i mean preachy. there was some good stuff in there, and he's obviously still working through things in his life, this just felt different for some reason. his previous works came off as more of a story being told. This came off more as, well... preachy. i still liked it and found value in some of what he talked about. it's really hard to pin-point, but there was something just off about this. if you are looking to get this because you liked his previous works, be wary. that's all i'm saying.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

found a way to make the voice of the author come across as a story being told, not something i'm being told. hard to explain, but... yeah.

Have you listened to any of Augusten Burroughs’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I love Augusten. I have listened to his previous work, but his work comes off better as a story, and not as "this is how it is".

What insight do you think you’ll apply from This Is How?

Trying to figure that out now. there were nuggets of wisdom here. thinking instead of jumping off a building, just finding a new city with a building i don't want to jump from.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I don't have any friends that need this type of help.

Would you be willing to try another book from Augusten Burroughs? Why or why not?

Yes, he is direct and to the point.

Have you listened to any of Augusten Burroughs’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    Never heard him be for.

Do you think This Is How needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Not really, at least on this subject.

    Any additional comments?

I liked Augusten's telling like it is. I think to many people today feel sorry for themselves and are stuck in the doldrums, if they are willing to take Augusten's advice they could move on and be more productive in almost every aspect of life.

    "Augusten Burroughs at his best"

I bought this audiobook based purely on the fact that I love Augusten's writing and view of the world. And I wasn't disappointed. Although I was not looking for a self help book, Augusten has such a great perspective on the world that there are insights in this book that have made me look at the world and myself in a completely different way. This is no usual self help book, but rather a man who's gone through it all, come out the other side and telling it like it really is.

I love that the author narrates this audiobook. As this is advice from his very personal experience, he's able to give life to his witty writing.

I listened to this right through in a very short time as it was riveting, and have now dipped back into it to re-listen to chapters that really resonated with me. I don't think this book will ever be deleted from my smart phone - this is a great book to listen to on public transport. You'll alight at the other end of your trip a much more alive person.

    "Not your typical Augusten Burroughs"
What would have made This Is How better?

It could be funnier.....like the majority of his books. This one is more like a lecture then entertaining stories about his life.

What was most disappointing about Augusten Burroughs’s story?

I have read most of his books and loved them all, I was sad to see that this story was not his usual type. However it was my fault for not researching that this was not his standard memoir style writing.

Classics, history, historical fiction, marketing, Napoleonic stuff and of course 'Boys own Adventure'. This is my bent. Occasional self help as well.

    "This is worth listening to"
What made the experience of listening to This Is How the most enjoyable?

It is real, it is different, it is good.

What did you like best about this story?

Augusten Burroughs talks from experience and real insight. I have been addicted to 'self help' books since 'How to Win Friends and Influence People' was put into my hands. Some help, most are a waste of time. This book is an unwelcome gush of fresh air.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

You could listen to this in one sitting, but it is best to listen to a chapter and digest it. Play around with the ideas and see how you could apply his logic and knowledge to your life.

    Any additional comments?

Take responsibility for your life by listening to this book. Take on the ideas presented and start to build a life that is living now. His advice is good.

    "Touched by Augusten"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I have already recommended this book to friends and clients; there is enough in it (enough touching, thoughtful and searingly sweet insight) to give most people who have faced or are facing life's letdowns and imperfections an affirming sense of camaraderie, confirmation and challenge to live life well and truthfully from a fellow human.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The overriding message is to be real, honest and to rigorously attend to what matters most in life- and seeing as how these things are yours for the choosing....well, you can't argue with that.

Was This Is How worth the listening time?

    Well worth a listen.
