From the #1 New York Times best-selling author of Running With Scissors comes a groundbreaking book that explores how to survive the "un-survivable" and will challenge your notion of self-help books.

To say that Augusten Burroughs has lived an unusual life is an understatement. From having no formal education past third grade and being raised by his mother’s psychiatrist in the seventies to enjoying one of the most successful advertising careers of the eighties to experiencing a spectacular downfall and rehab stint in the nineties to having a number one bestselling writing career in the new millennium, Burroughs has faced humiliation, transformation and everything in between.

This Is How is his no-holds-barred book of advice on topics as varied as:

  • How to feel like crap
  • How to ride an elevator
  • How to be thin
  • How to be fat
  • How to find love· How to feel sorry for yourself
  • How to get the job
  • How to end your life
  • How to remain unhealed
  • How to finish your drink
  • How to regret as little as possible
  • And much more

Told with Burroughs's unique voice, black humor, and in-your-face advice, This is How is Running With Scissors - with recipes.

If you like Dr. Phil you will like this.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I don't have any friends that need this type of help.

Would you be willing to try another book from Augusten Burroughs? Why or why not?

Yes, he is direct and to the point.

Have you listened to any of Augusten Burroughs’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Never heard him be for.

Do you think This Is How needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Not really, at least on this subject.

Any additional comments?

I liked Augusten's telling like it is. I think to many people today feel sorry for themselves and are stuck in the doldrums, if they are willing to take Augusten's advice they could move on and be more productive in almost every aspect of life.

This is worth listening to

What made the experience of listening to This Is How the most enjoyable?

It is real, it is different, it is good.

What did you like best about this story?

Augusten Burroughs talks from experience and real insight. I have been addicted to 'self help' books since 'How to Win Friends and Influence People' was put into my hands. Some help, most are a waste of time. This book is an unwelcome gush of fresh air.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

You could listen to this in one sitting, but it is best to listen to a chapter and digest it. Play around with the ideas and see how you could apply his logic and knowledge to your life.

Any additional comments?

Take responsibility for your life by listening to this book. Take on the ideas presented and start to build a life that is living now. His advice is good.

Not the story I thought

Would you try another book from Augusten Burroughs and/or Augusten Burroughs?

Yes

Would you be willing to try another book from Augusten Burroughs? Why or why not?

I am a big Augusten Burroughs fan — I loved Dry, and Running with Scissors. I thought that this book would be like his others, but not so.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The author reading his own work — he sounds incredibly sarcastic. Not the way he sounds in my head when I read him.

Was This Is How worth the listening time?

I did not get through the second chapter. Oh well.

Any additional comments?

I love Augsten Borroughs, but this book just did not capture my attention like an audio book needs to.

Would you ever listen to anything by Augusten Burroughs again?

Definitely yes.

Have you listened to any of Augusten Burroughs’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

He always reads well, but this is a pedantic book, read pedantically.

Did This Is How inspire you to do anything?

It inspired me to respect sadness.

Powerful and direct advice that worked 4 me....

Would you consider the audio edition of This Is How to be better than the print version?

The audio version is so much more compelling and inspirational than the print version. A night and day difference.

What did you like best about this story?

Burroughs offers insights to problems from real life experiences that so many people experience everyday. He presents ideas in a fresh manner that are instantly usable. I really admire his courage to reveal so much without the stain of self pity.

What about Augusten Burroughs’s performance did you like?

Burroughs is unflinching and direct when he addresses problems. Nothing is sugar coated.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Burroughs thoughtful analysis of a grim situation and declaring with great compassion that there is another way to solve a problem or deal with a tough uncomfortable moment in life. A game changer for me and those I've recommended the audio version to as a gift. That life really is incredible miracle and you are a part of that miracle....

My Favorite Self-Help Book

Read it. Just do it. I have read this book each year for the last several years and I always find I learn something new about myself each read. Augusten's best by far. And a jumping off point for those interested in a better life.
