    "Not Helpful"

This is one of the most upsetting books I have listened to on Audible. This book is mainly about the author and her personal problems. She appears to have mental health issues that she attributes to her son being gay. Despite encouraging people to love their gay children the message that gays are damaged and sinful is very strong. Blaming her son for her depression and fear of others finding out she is not perfect may not be helpful in helping parents deal with a gay child. Working to "keep satan from her son" does not feel like she is accepting her child. This book also blames sexual abuse for her son's homosexuality. While sexual abuse may be a part of some people living a homosexual life, it is presented as a defense for her son's sexual identity. It feels as if the author has issues in her role as a pastor's wife. Perhaps truth and honesty all along would be more encouraging than describing her situation as if she were a martyr due to her son's homosexuallity. I understand the Christian struggle surrounding homosexuality. However,a loving God has created all of us and He does not make mistakes. Knowing that God loves us and our children needs to be remembered when there is material like this book. The author describes that she sins, however, she sees her son's sins as "worse." If you believe homosexualilty is a sin, you know the Bible well enough to recognize it is not Man's job to create a hierarchy of sin. I hope those considering reading this book will see it as only one person's opinion. I wish that the book had included information from the author's son. I worry that he has taken on some of his mother's issues and struggles to accept himself. I hope Benjamin has gotten the support and help he needs to avoid perpetuating the abuse he suffered and the impact of the damaging attitudes from his mother. I find it very confusing she is making money from her "broken" homosexual son.
